Sure, the men of Star Wars may take centre stage for the most part, but behind every Empire, there is a woman building a Resistance. As we venture further into the new Star Wars trilogy, let's take some time to celebrate the women who were instrumental in the fight to save a galaxy far, far away.

1. Rey

When we're first introduced to Daisy Ridley's character, Rey is still just a humble scavenger, but by the end of The Force Awakens, it's become clear that our hero is one of the most important Star Wars characters of all. While we don't yet know what her destiny entails, what we do know is that Rey will continue to inspire men and women alike for generations to come, both on and off screen.

2. Princess Leia Organa

Long before Rey fought the good fight, Leia inspired the Galaxy to defeat the Empire through both her political power and sheer bravery. At just 17 years old, Leia already began to organize the Resistance and eventually became hugely influential in the Empire's defeat. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo may receive more screen time than Leia, but the Princess is arguably far more important to the franchise as a whole.

3. Mon Mothma

Under Emperor Palpatine's reign, Mon Mothma founded the Rebel Alliance alongside Leia's father, Bail Organa. Not only did the Resistance eventually overcome the Empire under Mon Mothma's leadership, but she was also instrumental in the rebuilding that following, helping to found the New Republic too.

4. Jyn Erso

Jyn Erso didn't live long enough to enjoy her own happy ending, but her actions were instrumental in creating a happy ending for the rest of the galaxy. As the lead in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it was Jyn and her mission to retrieve the Death Star plans that set everything in motion. In fact, it would have been impossible for the Resistance to eventually defeat the Empire without her.

5. Ahsoka Tano

Fan favorite character Ahsoka Tano hasn't appeared on the big screen yet, but that doesn't diminish her popularity or importance. As Anakin Skywalker's Padawan, the Jedi warrior ran major campaigns in the Clone Wars that shifted the balance of power in favor of the Rebellion. Fans who eagerly await Ahsoka's silver screen debut suspect that she may appear somehow in the new trilogy that's due to hit screens at some point after Episode IX.
