Production on Darren Aronofsky's next movie has retained a certain mystique during development, despite starring an impressive cast that includes the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Javier Bardem. However, fans eager to learn more about Mother! will be overjoyed to learn that the odds are finally in their favor. Aronofsky and his lead actress have now opened up about the secrecy of Mother! during an interview with Vogue, revealing a surprising injury that Lawrence sustained during filming.
Requiem For An Injury
Mother! tells the harrowing story of a couple whose lives begin to unravel after unexpected guests show up at their home, evoking films such as Funny Games and The Strangers with its premise. Given how Aronofsky has pushed his leads in the past, forcing the likes of Natalie Portman and Mickey Rourke to delve deep into their emotions for a chance at Oscar glory, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that Lawrence was similarly tested. However, it's probably safe to say that the four-time Oscar nominee has never pushed herself this much physically before.
Lawrence is no stranger to physically demanding roles, first winning audiences over as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games trilogy, before shifting both form and sides as Mystique across a number of X-Men movies. However, the young actress told Vogue that her role in Mother! was her most challenging yet:
“I had to go to a darker place than I’ve ever been in my life. I didn’t know if I’d be able to come out ok.”
While the majority of Lawrence's most famous roles have included a strong physical aspect, her emotionally taxing part in Mother! ended up injuring the star more than any stunt work in the likes of X-Men: Apocalypse. During one particularly taxing scene, Lawrence hyperventilated so much that she ended up dislocating a rib, forcing production to stop while the actress was given oxygen.
Despite being her partner in real life, Aronofsky was keen to continue filming after Lawrence's injury, provoking an understandably strong reaction from the Mockingjay:
“I have oxygen tubes in my nostrils, and Darren’s like, ‘It was out of focus; we’ve got to do it again. And I was just like, ‘Go fuck yourself.'”
In order to help Lawrence overcome the stress of filming, some crew members volunteered as tribute and set up a "happy place" where she could recuperate as and when it was necessary. What brings the young actress joy, I hear you ask? It turns out that gumballs and looped clips of the Kardashians are what it takes to distance oneself from the distressing material of #Mother!
Lawrence revealed during their interview with Vogue that she had seen Mother! for the first time herself just a few hours before, and couldn't stop thinking about the experience.
“The themes are just huge. I can’t use the word I want to use, but the movie is unique. When I saw the movie, I was reminded all over again how brilliant [Aronofsky] is."
While #JenniferLawrence expected darkness from the screening, what took her surprise was how beautiful Aronofsky's latest movie is. Still, given what we've learned about her experience on set, we can't help but feel that Mother! could turn out to be his most difficult film to watch yet.
While Lawrence is likely to be rewarded for her harrowing experience with Oscar recognition when awards season arrives, the rest of us will have to make do with our very own gumball collection and YouTube clips of the Kardashians once Mother! hits cinemas on 15 September.
