Really, what is with the lack of women in Middle Earth? As Hitfix correctly suggest, the context in which Tolkien was writing in the 1930's was undoubtedly 'an old boy's club'. So much so, that Peter Jackson had to as good as trick Evangeline Lilly into a love triangle in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in order to re-stimulate the population.

That's exactly why Russian photographer Alexander Turchanin, decided to take matters into his own hands by doing a bit of gender balancing, transforming the beloved male characters into women.
