It was in 2015 when Lionsgate gave the reigns to their #PowerRangers reboot to director Dean Israelite. In October of 2016 we got our first teaser trailer and now, in the beginning of 2017, Lionsgate has dropped an official trailer two months before the March 24 release date.
The trailer is full of humor, excitement, action and everything that feeds our Power Rangers nostalgia — with a twist. With all that said, there was a lot more that jumped off the screen with the release of both trailers. Like many other directors, Israelite appears to have drawn inspiration from other movies. Here are four movies that probably inspired Dean Israelite's vision.
1. 'Project Almanac' (2015)
Like me, some of you may have noticed the similarities between the Rangers and director Dean Israelite’s time traveling flick Project Almanac. The most obvious is the five teenagers huddled around a bright light.
Wait there’s more: In addition to the glowing huddle, both films have the classic teen romance between its stars, like David (Jonny Weston) and Jessie (Sofia Black-D’Elia) in Project Almanac and the parallels to Jason (Dacre Montgomery) and Kimberley (Naomi Scott) in Power Rangers, who appear to be feeling each other. I can see the Tommy Jason beef happening in the sequel already. It’s clear that Dean Israelite’s 2015 film had a palpable impact on his Power Rangers.
2. 'Chronicle' (2012)
Unsuspecting teens decide to check out a strange object that crash-landed from the sky — BAM! They are transformed into super humans. It’s hard to deny the similarities between Dean Israelite’s #PowerRangers and Josh Trank’s Chronicle.
Chronicle’s writer, Max Landis, seems to agree. Max had some very interesting words to say after the initial Power Rangers trailer dropped, in a series of tweets the American Ultra writer commented:
Shots fired. The Victor Frankenstein creator probably came off a bit jealous, but the proof is in the pudding, or should I say — puddy?
3. 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' (2012)
Nothing about the classic clay minions of Rita Repulsa screams intimidating. The Putty Patrol were nothing more than a warm-up act for the Rangers. They never really did anything dangerous, just mischievous. They bounced around making weird sounds and weren’t formidable by any means. Well, in 2017 that will change, seeing as how these Putty Patrollers are physically different:
They are large, gray, with exceptional strength and appear to be molded from the Earth. Goldar, Rita's right hand in the TV series, appears to be the alpha. Like The Hobbit’s Stone Giants, Goldar not only looks the same, he crumbles, and moves slow (except he's gold with wings).
4. 'Spider-Man 3' (2007)
Outside of the obvious similarities, like the super human abilities or the geek getting revenge on his bullies, both Power Rangers and Spider-Man share another obvious similarity. The villain-filled Spidey spectacular introduced fans to the symbiote Venom, an extraterrestrial parasite. In the movie both Peter Parker and Eddie Brock were swallowed by Venom, ultimately leaving them with an exoskeleton suite.
Like Spider-Man 3, Jason (Red Ranger) is engulfed by his prehistoric power source — the Tyrannosaurus — in similar fashion.
Well, that about does it. If this article didn’t excite you, maybe these articles will. Still, feel free to drop by the comment section.
