Jeez, Neill - is hitting the snooze button a luxury reserved exclusively for the mediocre? We imagine busiest-man-in-sci-fi must be skimping on lie ins at the moment, since, having only just finished Elysium, he's already moving forward with his next project.
Chappie is a sci-fi comedy that Blomkamp is directing this fall. It tells the story of a robot who has artificial intelligence and who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The robot, Chappie, will be voiced by longtime Blomkamp collaborator , while Ninja and , members of the rap-rave duo Die Antwoord will play the two gangsters. Blomkamp has co-written the script with his wife, , who he also collaborated with on District 9.
Blomkamp previously stated he'd be using his sci-fi short, Tetra Vaal as a jumping off point for Chappie. If you haven't watched it before, check it out below:
Aaannnd, here's an eccentric short film from Die Antwoord that I can't make head nor tail of but which is pretty entertaining and faintly Samuel Beckett-y:
While the story seems to have changed a lot from Blomkamp's short, he did confirm that the robot would retain his rabbit ears (which are a homage to manga Appleseed's robot character Briareos Hecatonchires).
Elysium opened at #1 in the US over the weekend, and was also #1 in Sweden, Ukraine, Taiwan and Russia.
