What's the American Dream like deep inside the Rust Belt? Since I'm not from there, I can't really give you much of a perspective on that; but has a gritty vision of his own of the region coming out in about a month: Out of the Furnace.
With a star-studded cast which includes , , , , , and , Out of the Furnace looks poised to become one of the Oscar favorites this season. The official synopsis sums up the plot thusly:
Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. When the police fail to crack the case, Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother.
Here's a one-minute clip featuring Bale and Harrelson, where they face each other off in an epic contest to see who can look at the other with the most raw contempt in their expressions:
I got a problem with everybody.
Certainly looks like a promising flick to me, not just because of the writer/director/cast combination, but because there's nothing that fits the current Depression era like a gritty, blue-collar story laced with organized crime and extralegal vigilantism. We'll have to wait and see if the performances are as good as expected from these big Hollywood players, but this clip seemed to prove it to me, at least.

Out of the Furnace premieres on December 6th.
