The Walking Dead loves throwing curve balls at us with every single episode and no season more than #TheWalkingDeadSeason7. The latest one involved Daryl Dixon in several ways, as he chose to lie to Carol regarding Negan developments to protect her already fragile mental state, fight Richard to save Carol's life and...

Still here? Perfect. The biggest shocker from the episode came when he decided to leave the Kingdom, and return to the Hilltop.
Daryl had been placed under Ezekiel's protection to be safe from Negan, as Negan kidnapped Daryl and tortured him for a long time. So why the hell would he go back somewhere where only beatings and probably death are waiting for him, you impatiently ask? #NormanReedus recently gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly, and in it, he finally explained Daryl's mindset. When asked about the reason for his departure, he references his (very) violent confrontation with Richard:
"Did you see the part where I beat the s— out of that guy? [...] It’s a different thing, because they need the numbers. They need these people to fight Negan. But at the same time, he’s not going to let him sacrifice her for that job. You’re going to have to find another way, you know?"
He continued, stating that Daryl has had enough of not being useful to his team:
"He’s just done. He’s going to do it himself. The thing about Daryl is, he’s loyal to one group, and it’s hard for him to stay behind and stay behind and stay behind. He’s just had enough. He’s got to figure out a way to do this where it works for everybody, but also he’s not going to take anything away from his family."

So basically, #DarylDixon is going back because he's a total badass who refuses to stay out of the action.
That's the in-story reason for Dixon coming back, however, what about the behind-the-scenes one? Well, in true Norman Reedus fashion, the actor revealed his return to action was because of boredom:
"There are certain scenes where you’re like, 'Oh, man. Can I be in that?!' That was one of them. Cutting the zombies in half with the wire and the two cars, I was like 'Oh, man. Do I have to stay back while you guys go do that?’ Like, c’mon!"
So Daryl is finally back in action. We should expect a lot of crossbow badassery to come our way. The question now is...
