Spoilers follow for Orange Is the New Black Season 4.
Last summer, #Netflix's Orange Is the New Black's fourth season became its most culturally relevant to date. The show tackled a number of topics seemingly ripped from the headlines, and the Season 4 finale did what most great series do: kept viewers on the edge of their seats with stress, excitement and curiosity.
The cliffhanger we got was easily the show's most intense finale since #OITNB premiered in 2013. It left us with a lot of emotions and questions that we still are sitting with as we prepare, almost a year later, for the Season 5 premiere on June 9, 2017.
So let's focus on the top five burning questions we have leading into the season premiere. Viewers will have plenty more questions, but these are the biggest pertaining to the Season 4 finale.
5. Will Judy King Get Out Of Prison?
Season 4 had a decent amount of screentime for Litchfield's most famous inmate, Judy King. The celebrity chef ruffled quite a few feathers during her stay at the prison, and was in a quick hurry to try and get out in the wake of Poussey's death. However, in the finale, she is caught in the middle of the impending prison riot after Taystee finds out Bayley was not fired for killing Poussey.
So, the question remains: Will Judy King make it out of Litchfield? Or will she be caught in the riot and wind up hurt or charged further?
4. Will Bayley Or Piscatella Return To Litchfield?
The fate of these two correctional officers is a major question regarding Season 5. After the accidental death of Poussey, CO Bayley is placed on temporary leave by Caputo, and his usually soft-natured personality is shattered. Will Bayley ever return to Litchfield as an officer? It seems unthinkable, but Caputo has left that door open.
On the other hand, CO Piscatella (who was in charge during Poussey's death) was sent home by Caputo in the wake of the incident. Piscatella defended his staff and their actions during the event, but since Bayley was not fired, it's hard to see how or why they would get rid of Piscatella. It makes you wonder if he will return to the prison, or if he will return to his previous duty station at the maximum security facility.
3. What Will Happen To Lolly, Crazy Eyes And Healy?
Mental health awareness was somewhat of an underlying theme in Season 4 and we saw it manifest with Lolly, Crazy Eyes (a.k.a. Suzanne) and CO Healy.
Perhaps the biggest question is whether or not Crazy Eyes will be permanently sent to psych. She's always been more erratic than other inmates and has been in and out of psych before. Not to mention she beat up her admirer, Kukudio, and incited the cafeteria protest that left Poussey dead.
Lolly and Healy also were also caught up in the mental health system by the Season 4 finale. Lolly was charged with the murder of the guard in the garden. After turning Lolly in, Healy faces his own demons after a suicide attempt and checks himself into a mental hospital for treatment. Whether either of them will return to Litchfield is unclear at this point.
2. Will We See More New Inmates?
Caputo's transition into the warden has been a difficult one. We saw his struggles throughout Season 4 as he dealt with the massive influx of inmates, the red tape that comes with a privately owned facility, and the fact that his new policies caused a mass walkout of his previous (and tenured) COs.
Helping him through the struggle on the sly is former warden Natalie Figueroa, and she dropped a potential bomb on Caputo near the end of Season 4. Basically, she implies that even more inmates are on their way to Litchfield, so we very well could be getting more new characters in season 5. You can't help but wonder how or where they will fit in.
1. Will Daya Pull The Trigger?
After Bayley is placed on leave, Taystee and other inmates lose control and start an uprising against the already overwhelmed (and understaffed) prison staff. The final moments show Daya obtaining a gun that came loose from CO Humphrey's possession. She exercises some authority by making Humphrey and CO McCullough get down on the ground, but she continues to point the loaded weapon at them with dozens of inmates cheering her on.
Will Daya pull the trigger and be sent to maximum security with further charges, or will she drop the gun and spare the COs? The fate of Season 5 really is in Daya's hands.
