Today is a sad day in the world of anime. Oscar-winning director has announced his retirement and that his latest movie, The Wind Rises, which is currently in competition at the Venice Film Festival, will be his last.
An enigmatic statement from Studio Ghibli president Koju Hoshino simply reads, "He wants to say goodbye to all of you."
The 72 year old is one of the most celebrated directors of all time and won an Oscar in 2003 for the breathtaking Spirited Away as well as a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 2005.
