Making its return to San Diego Comic-Con, the time-traveling series Outlander delivered big on the hype that its latest trailer promised. With Season 3 set to premiere on September 10, the cast, executive producers and author Diana Gabaldon took to SDCC's Ballroom 20 to offer fans some clues and insights.
Right upfront, producer and showrunner Ronald D. Moore explained that Season 3 will focus on the 20 years that Jamie and Claire spent apart, with a bonus of "a sea voyage, a new world and Fraser's Ridge." He also confirmed that Season 3 will open back at the Battle of Culloden:
One of the most-awaited scenes from the book Voyager to make its way into next season, the "printshop scene," was described as "a huge moment" for Claire and Jamie — with Sam Heughan confirming Diana Gabaldon's account that he'd actually fainted 19 times for that scene:
On what will possibly be Tobias Menzies' last #SDCC with #Outlander (unless Ronald finds another brilliant way to keep him around), he credited the locations in Scotland — with some Jacobite history — for making his performance more natural. As for playing two completely different characters for three seasons, Menzies explained that both come from his opposite feelings and emotions.
The panel closed with a surprise appearance from Graham McTavish, who played Jamie's uncle Dougal MacKenzie, and a recap of both seasons with the familiar voiceover from Claire. But the biggest and most wonderful treat was the surprise opportunity to watch the entire Season 3 premiere episode in its first-ever screening.
Unfortunately the rest of us will have to wait until September 10 when Outlander Season 3 hits Starz.
