(WARNING: The following contains major SPOILERS for the most recent episode of Fox's Gotham, as well as some speculation regarding the show's future plans. Proceed with whatever level of caution that suggests to you is wise.)

Now, for all that 's is purportedly about the adventures of a young Jim Gordon and a teenaged Bruce Wayne, it's long since become apparent that it's really a story about the city's far more interesting villains. As such, it probably shouldn't be all that much of a surprise that the show recently introduced an intriguing romantic twist for one of its most beloved villains — and yet the nature of that twist is still a pleasant surprise. Y'see...

Penguin's New Love Interest On Gotham Is A Shipper's Dream

Largely because a whole lot of fans have already been shipping the relationship for years now. The romance in question? Well, it seems that Oswald "" Cobblepot has fallen head over heels for none other than Edward "Not-Quite-The-Riddler-Yet" Nygma. Heck, he's even fully aware of that fact, revealing in the most recent episode of the show that:

"I've found someone... but love is no good if it's one-sided. I must confess my feelings to Ed."

Which is a) pretty adorable, and b) exactly what countless fan-fic writers and fan artists have been waiting for since the show first started. The only problem? Nygma may not feel the same way. While Cobblepot spent much of the show's most recent episode trying to work up the nerve to confess his feelings, "Ed" managed to find himself a whole new romantic sub-plot, in the form of a young woman who looks suspiciously like his lost love, Kristen Kringle.

Of course, since this newfound love interest seems a little too good to be true (she flirts via riddles, which is a pretty big warning sign that Ed may be being real-life catfished),it's also entirely possible that there's still hope for shippers of Nygmobblepot yet. It's just that we might all have to wait a while to find out for sure...
