Earlier today the first full-length trailer for the Penny Dreadful TV show dropped.
Showtime's sacrifice to the alter of terror, Penny Dreadful is a Gothic horror that sees some of the creepiest creatures from literary history emerge from the shadows.
Plot details for the TV show are still cloaked in secrecy, but here's an in-depth look at the new trailer to see if we can glean any diabolical information.
So without further ado, please join me as we explore the Penny Dreadful trailer breakdown.
A Foggy Day in London Town
Although filmed exclusively in Ireland, Penny Dreadful is set in London in 1891.
300: Rise of an Empire star, , plays Vanessa, who, as well as dabbling with tarot cards, is an enigmatic woman with haunted eyes, who will prove herself a force to be reckoned with as the heroine of the series. ""Do you believe there is a demimonde? A half-world between what we know and what we fear?" she asks us with a hint of menace.
Penny Dreadful is dripping with talent. Gladiator and Skyfall scribe, , penned the script and will serve as Executive Producer alongside Oscar-winning director, , while The Impossible director, , is on board to direct the first two episodes.
Break These Bonds
"A place in the shadows. Rarely seen but deeply felt."
The Name's Malcolm...
That person with the beard and sinister stare is James Bond alum . He's playing Sir Malcolm, "a hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest." Intriguing.
Dr Frankenstein, I presume
Lone Ranger actor, , has been cast as Victor Frankenstein. Looks like he's been caught out in the rain without an umbrella. Silly Victor.
Am I Still Beautiful?
This bare-chested fellow is Dorian Gray, the eternally youthful guy with a passion for paintings. Well, his own painting anyway. Fun Fact: , who plays Gray, wrote and performed the song, "New for You," for the The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 soundtrack. Knowledge.
My, my, what a large scar that is. Say hello to Frankenstein's most infamous creation.
Could this be famed Vampire Slayer Van Helsing? Note to self: When dispatching of monsters is needed, use a timber hook. It looks cool as f@$k.
A Picture of Dorian Gray
The show also promises to be a psycho-sexual horror. This is obviously the sexy part.
The Stakes are High
It looks like the vampires in Penny Dreadful will be more of the "I want to rip your throat out" kind, as opposed to the sparkly love-sick variety.
Look Who's Back!
Josh Hartnett is back... and rocking a lovely beard. He's playing Ethan Chandler, "a man of action and daring who isn’t afraid of violence. He’s charming and brash but there are demons behind his eyes. He’s more complicated than he likes to admit." Welcome back Josh, you've been missed.
It's an Invitation
Penny Dreadful invites you to share in the scares, May 11th at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
