The first installment of 's Hobbit trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, may not have cleaned up at the Oscars or even finished out as one of 2012's best-loved movies. That said, some of us certainly took to the movie-maker's vast, expanded take of 's fantasy novel.

Earlier this week, selected bloggers were treated to an online sneak preview of footage from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. We got a glimpse of the studios where the movies are being hatched, in the company of a playful Jackson and co-host (Nori the Dwarf).

Jackson also managed to troll the entire internet by promising a sneak peak at Smaug the dragon and revealing this image:

A less than desirable first look at 's Smaug then, but instead we're treated to our first look of Tauriel, a character not mentioned in the book and played by Lost's . With all of Jackson's tinkering, I wouldn't be surprised if Gollum turns up again as Smaug's sidekick or perhaps Aragorn and Boromir will inexplicably show up at the Battle of Five Armies.
