We all know how it ends. The Death Star plans are finally stolen from the Empire and the Rebellion learns about the superweapon’s weakness, thus allowing them to go in and obliterate it once and for all. However, plenty of question marks still surround this film, with one of the biggest being: What ultimately happens to the character of Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)?

Krennic is an interesting fella, to say the least. As of now, we don’t really know much about this character other than that he apparently has a rich history with Jyn Erso’s father, Galen. We've also learned that, as a working class sort of villain, he will have beef with the elitism of the Empire.

The beginning of the latest trailer shows that history between Galen and Krennic. But what about the rest? With Krennic looking to be the next big shot for the Empire, here are 5 ways Krennic's Rogue One story could play out, from the least likely to the most likely scenario.

5. Krennic Lives To Fight Another Day

Krennic surviving to live another day would be the unlikeliest scenario for this character. No matter how popular he may become with fans before or after this movie concludes, it would be much too difficult to keep him alive, especially when we never see or hear of him in the original trilogy. It would be a challenge to explain to fans that Krennic goes off somewhere in the galaxy and escapes the war that unfolded on the Empire. Some have even theorized that he may also become the one who is responsible for allowing the Rebels to steal the plans. It would be a cop-out move if Krennic is able to escape; hopefully there are no plans to keep him around after this film.

4. Krennic Is Killed In Battle

Krennic dying in the heat of battle is probably the second least likely scenario in the film. It would be a complete waste to build up his entire character and then to see him perish by his own mistakes. Besides, we’ve already had Grand Moff Tarkin get obliterated on behalf of his own selfishness in Episode IV. Tarkin believed the Death Star could not be penetrated and underestimated the courageousness of the Rebellion. Seeing Krennic die in battle or inside his own ship would just be too repetitious.

3. Krennic Is Killed By Jyn Or Galen Erso

Now we’re starting to get into the real meat and potatoes of plausibility here. As I mentioned earlier in this article, Krennic and Galen go way back together to when Galen's daughter, Jyn, was only a child. With this much correlation between the two, it would not surprise me if Krennic were to die at the hands of Galen or his daughter Jyn. This all depends on the story Gareth Edwards wants to tell and it would be a fitting end to the character of Krennic if this were to happen. However, I find the last two options for Krennic’s death most logical.

2. Krennic Is Executed By Grand Moff Tarkin Himself

As mentioned above, Tarkin's selfishness eventually led to his death. Luke Skywalker put the final nail in the coffin by firing two proton torpedoes into the Death Star’s exhaust port, thus annihilating the entire space station in the process. Tarkin, however, has been confirmed to star in Rogue One in some form or another. It's quite possible that Director Krennic and Grand Moff Tarkin are at odds with each other, fighting for their rightful rank in the Empire. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to have a scene where Tarkin executes him in a very cruel way in order to show he's the true leader of the Empire.

1. Krennic Is Assassinated At The Hands Of Darth Vader

The trailer gave us a few good shots of both Vader and Krennic conversing with each other. However, one of those shots featured Vader storming toward Krennic and he appears to be one very angry Dark Lord of the Sith. The most probable scenario for the conclusion to Krennic’s story would be at the hands of Darth Vader. As we know from the original trilogy, Vader does not take failure lightly and no Imperial officer is safe.

Everyone’s life is at stake, especially when you work for the Empire.
