The Nazis are coming back. But not as you remember them. We've had Nazi zombies in Dead Snow and steam-powered Germans in Sucker Punch, now it seems it's time to combine the two to make Franken-Nazis. That's right, in Frankenstein's Army, the dying National Socialist regime turns to the works of Dr. Victor Frankenstein to battle off the Allies. Check the first massive theatrical poster, as well as the synopsis, below:
Although the poster seems pretty self-explanatory, here's the official synopsis:
Using shocking vintage newsreel footage as his jumping-off point, Richard Raaphorst has hit on a unique and bold premise. Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary's Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of supersoldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler's last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.
Despite what the synopsis says, I'm not quite sure how original and bold the Dutch director's premise really is. Other than the two movies mentioned above, Frankenstein's Army isn't all that different from the classic video game Castle Wolfenstein. But, with that game's own movie adaptation seemingly forgotten, Frankenstein's Army might be our best bet for another alternative supernatural-history-horror.
