Spoilers follow for Power Rangers (2017).
Power Rangers isn't just a one-off movie — it was planned as the first of six installments. Whether or not the rebooted franchise actually gets to that point remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the new film serves as a major stepping stone for what's to come, and it begins and ends with the Zeo Crystal.
Just like how the Infinity Gems have propelled the Marvel Cinematic Universe toward next year's culmination, Avengers: Infinity War, the Zeo Crystal will likely propel future Power Rangers movies. So let's take a look at what it is and what to expect.

The Zeo Crystal Is The Heart Of Power Rangers
Saban’s Power Rangers is centered around five unfamiliar teenagers forced to team up in order to stop an evil being, Rita Replusa, who had finally awakened after 65 million years. The Rangers were thrown into the fire (literally) to finish what Zordon couldn't by himself: stop Rita from finding the Zeo Crystal, which she could use to destroy Earth.
Rita, with the help of her newly resurrected monster Goldar, destroyed Angel Grove (and more tragically Krispy Kreme) in search of the illustrious crystal. Fortunately for the rest of the world, the Rangers and their Megazord were able to stop Rita and Goldar — this time.
Why Is The Zeo Crystal So Powerful?
For fans of the '90s TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Zeo Crystal may sound familiar. In fact, the crystal signaled the end of the Mighty Morphin era, opening the door for Power Rangers Zeo.
In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Zeo Crystal is protected by a force field that destroys anybody not purely good who comes into contact with it; that very shield is the reason for Lord Zedd's red disfigured look.
The Zeo Crystal gives the wielder access to the Morphin Grid, the power source of the Rangers' powers. Rita Repulsa’s father, Master Vile, comes to Earth seeking the Zeo Crystal. With the only weapon strong enough to destroy it, the White Ranger (Tommy Oliver) cuts the Zero Crystal up into five pieces, scattering it.
Master Vile reverses time, rendering the Rangers powerless; the team must go on a quest to retrieve their respective crystals and become the Zeo Rangers.
How It Relates To The Infinity Gauntlet
The Zeo Crystal is made up of five sub-crystals spread throughout time and space, and — if reassembled — will be a nearly unlimited source of power.
Meanwhile, fans of Marvel know just how important the Infinity Gauntlet is. It’s a collection of six powerful stones that each possess unique and great powers; when collected, they give its possessor the ability to shape the universe in any way they can imagine. No wonder the Mad Titian Thanos is seeking its powers!
The Infinity Stones are the true puzzle pieces of the #MCU, going all the way back to Captain America: The First Avenger — which is exactly the dynamic that Saban is setting up in this Power Rangers reboot.
What The Zeo Crystal Could Mean For The Franchise Going Forward
While the details surrounding the future films are still unclear, the first installment gave fans a brief and broad look at what could happen. As convoluted as the Power Rangers TV series are, Saban's movies can create a clearer arc.
It is almost a forgone conclusion that we will see Rita rise again. We can only speculate that she won't be alone, especially now that we know Tommy Oliver to be the next addition to the franchise. If history serves us right, fans of the series know just how dangerous Rita and Tommy can be together.
Whatever happens, there is one thing that's clear: there will be a fight for the Zeo Crystal. As long as the crystal exists, it leaves an open window for more enemies like Lord Zedd or Master Vile to be the Thanos of the Power Rangers universe.
