The New Mutants is happening in 2018 whether #XMen fans are happy about it or not as 20th Century Fox is trying to bring their X-Men franchise in a different direction rather than keep using the same old X-Men. In this movie, all of the characters we have met in the previous movies are being removed with a fresh new cast playing never-before-seen-on-screen characters is moving forward.
The cast of the new movie will include Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Magik, Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) as Cannonball, along with characters Dani Moonstar aka Cheyenne/Mirage, Sunspot, and Warlock. Obviously, these are all lesser-known X-Men that only the biggest Marvel fans know about. While it's a shame that we might never get to see what Fox was going to do with the mutants added to Apocalypse, it seems like one main star might stay in the X-Men franchise.

James McAvoy To Return As Professor X?
For actors starring in movies, it tends to be hard to realize what has been confirmed to the public and what hasn't, considering they know so much information months ahead before it's released to the general audience. This generalization seems to apply to the rising actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who just potentially spoiled a huge casting decision for New Mutants. Anya is to play the New Mutant Magik, who in the comics is the younger sister of Colossus. Colossus was last seen in Deadpool last year.
Taylor-Joy was interviewed by ComingSoon at a press conference for the upcoming thriller Split and the young actress wound up potentially revealing some big news about New Mutants, especially considering we have heard so little about the movie in the past couple of months. She first talked about the Demon Bear animatic and pretty much confirmed him as the villain.
“I have [seen the Demon Bear animatic], it’s pretty cool. I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.”
ComingSoon then asked her if she would be seeing her co-star in Split, James McAvoy, star as Professor X in New Mutants movie — and she practically spills the beans.
“I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?”
Taylor-Joy has, admittedly very loosely, confirmed the fact that James McAvoy's Professor X will have a large role in The New Mutants. While it was pretty obvious considering the fact that the team is consisted of Xavier's graduates, we weren't exactly sure whether or not Fox was going to bring McAvoy back.

If this proves true, I think Fox is making the best decision — next to giving the X-Men back to Marvel, at least — continuing the franchise with a team full of lesser-known characters. Bringing in James McAvoy would be a very nice touch considering he has done a fantastic job playing the character throughout the previous X-Men trilogy.
