There were reports after the movie's 2012 release that the 48-year-old actor's paycheck could be close to that amount, factoring in both box office business and the specifics of his contract with Marvel.
But, when asked about the renumeration in a recent interview with GQ, RDJ confirmed that everything he touches on the screen turns to gold, by stating:
Yeah. Isn't that crazy? They're so pissed. I can't believe it. I'm what's known as 'a strategic cost.'
That's $50 million for about 40 minutes of screen time.
Marvel, long known for being tight-fisted about actors' salaries, had to pay Downey what he wanted because he really is a strategic cost; his participation in the movie directly brought people to the theaters and help the studio pocket that 1.5 billion big ones.
