On October 14, BBC America's surprise smash hit Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, based on the Douglas Adams novels of the same name, will return to the small screen. Following the adventures of the titular holistic detective and his assisti-friend Todd, Dirk Gently is without a doubt the most unusual detective show on TV. Dirk is not a normal detective — he doesn't waste time looking for clues or dusting for fingerprints. Instead, he waits for the universe to lead him in the right direction. Everything in the universe is connected to everything else, so Dirk inevitably solves cases simply because he is hired to do so.
Todd, understandably so, remarks that Dirk's method "sounds insane" when he first hears about it, yet as the plot unfolds, the holistic method turns out to be less insane than imagined. Simply by following where the universe leads them, Dirk and Todd are able to solve a murder and find a missing girl, but the path they take isn't necessarily a straight one.
Haven't watched Season 1? Catch up and don't let that deter you from tuning in to Season 2! You'll be depriving yourself of an utterly unforgettable television experience if you don't. Here's three reasons why you shouldn't miss out on this unique show.
3. A Refreshingly Odd Premise
Most detective shows are set in realistic worlds with methodical investigations into rather ordinary crimes (robbery, murder, etc.). #DirkGently, on the other hand, is set in a world where time travel and soul-swapping are the result of a broken invention and mortals are on a first-name basis with Norse gods.
Dirk's world gleefully eschews logic in favor of the outrageous, the insane and the impossible. By the end of the season, it's a world you'll find yourself desperately wishing was real, if for no other reason than there's nothing else quite like it.
2. Diverse And Interesting Characters
There's never been a detective like Dirk Gently: clueless and ineffective yet enthusiastic and oddly charming. Nor has there ever been an assisti-friend quite like Todd Brotzman, a guitar-playing bellhop who's trying to make up for some appallingly bad decisions he made long ago. But Dirk and Todd are not alone in their investigations — there's also Todd's sister Amanda, a spirited girl with pararibulitis who's tired of living in constant fear, Farah Black, a failed FBI academy entrant, the Rowdy 3, a group of energy vampires who have a knack for showing up at the most unexpected times, as well as many others.
What's the one thing all of these characters have in common? No one is perfect. They've all made choices they regret; they've hurt the people closest to them. Their lives are a mess because of their bad decisions, but they also know that they don't have to let those decisions define them.
1. Everything Really Is Connected
The tagline for Dirk Gently is "Everything is connected," and it's more than just a clever phrase. Completely disparate plot lines converge in unexpected ways and oddly-shaped puzzle pieces connect to form a masterpiece.
What do a lost corgi and a missing girl have in common? What connection does a computer hacker have to a group of cultists in Seattle? What does a kitten have to do with a billionaire's murder? How can all of these things be connected? As it turns out, in a very complicated fashion. The most exciting party is watching it all come together.
Season 2 of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency premieres on October 14th on BBC America. Will you be watching?
