One of the most well-known staples of the early 2000s was Anne Hathaway's breakout movie, The Princess Diaries, which was a success with both critics and fans. Though the sequel wasn't as well received as the first, Princess Mia's (Anne Hathaway) regal shenanigans as the rightful heir to Genovia proved to be so memorable that fans of The Princess Diaries are still hoping for Mia's story to get a third chapter.

Thirteen years after The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, hope for a potential The Princess Diaries 3 has been rekindled thanks to some updates regarding the sequel's development.

For those who may not know, The Princess Diaries and its sequel were based on the book series of the same name from Meg Cabot. Recently, Cabot spoke with Entertainment Weekly and teased the likelihood of a third Princess Diaries movie.

Cabot also revealed that a third entry would be more than just a trip down memory lane, since she and the movie's stars - and - would like to dedicate the sequel to the original movie's director Garry Marshall, who passed away in 2016.

“I think we might do it in honor of him ... Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to ... who knows? [It] could happen, as we say”

The author of the 14 Princess Diaries books then gave some specifics on the sequel, citing her novels and acknowledging the liberties that the movies took. She did, however, confirm that there are active talks between her and producers for a third Princess Diaries movie.

"As for what the plot could be, I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can’t. I’m not allowed. But it’s really more following the movie than the books, so if she [Mia] — the last version I read, she definitely did not find out that she has a biracial younger sister … which I personally would’ve thought was hilarious, but that was not the direction they were going."

For Cabot, the only thing that could be as good - or better - than The Princess Diaries 3 would be a Broadway musical adaptation of her stories. Though she admits that she'd have to find the perfect lyricist for the musical since her writing skill set doesn't include songwriting. That being said, it's clearly something that she would love to see become a reality.

So, Will The Princess Diaries 3 Ever Happen?

Recently, has been capitalizing on its nostalgic properties by either remaking them or offering new sequels. Some remakes include the live-action versions of animated Disney classics such as Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book, while Mary Poppins is getting an unlikely sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns. Disney's live action adaptations have been immensely popular so far, and many fans are eager to revisit Mary Poppins' wonderful world, so who's to say that Disney won't revisit the lands of Genovia?

16 years may have passed, but The Princess Diaries remains as beloved as it was when it was first released, and deserves a proper conclusion. Princess Mia's royal adventures still boast a dedicated fanbase who would eagerly rush to cinemas on its opening night, and the influence fans have on upcoming titles is greater than ever before. So, it's fair to say that The Princess Diaries 3 could be coming to theaters sooner rather than later.
