The legend of Solenya taught us to never be wasteful again, slurping up every last drop of our soup in fear that the Pickle Man will steal our dreams. Bizarrely though, one character took this philosophy to heart a little too much this week in the already iconic Rick and Morty episode 'Pickle Rick'.

In a show where a man can turn himself into a briny deli snack to avoid family therapy, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that some characters in Rick and Morty eat poop. Rick has joked more than once that Doofus Rick can't get enough of the brown stuff, and a TV clip from another dimension showed a man suffering from coprophagia too.

However, it wasn't until the 'Pickle Rick' episode aired that we learned how some residents of the "normal" dimension that Rick and Morty takes place in enjoy eating poop too. This first becomes apparent outside Dr Wong's office when Mr Goldenfold accidentally admits to the Sanchez family that he partakes in a backdoor snack from time to time. At first, this seemed to just be another bizarre character quirk — but of course, Reddit delved deeper into this scene, pulling out ideas with the same glee as Pickle Rick when he pulled out the spine of a rat earlier in the episode.

Mr Goldenfold Is In Quite The Pickle

Anyone who knowingly eats poop is probably not in a good place, mentally speaking. The nutritional value of those man-made nuggets is basically zero, and no amount of chewing gum is going to freshen your breath after a hearty meal of fecal matter. As fans already know, Mr Goldenfold wasn't particularly happy after his wife left him, so it's entirely possible that he developed coprophagia as a way of coping with this loss. However, new evidence suggests that the teacher may in fact love nibbling on some stool because of something that Rick said way back in the second episode of Season 1.

It seems that Redditor Pir-o was the first to spot a connection between Goldenfold's new diet and the episode titled Lawnmower Dog, where Rick mentions accidentally having poop in his mouth. Fans will remember that this was the episode where Rick and Morty dived into people's minds and implanted new ideas, Inception-style. The suggestion here was that Rick may have subconsciously been thinking about the brown stuff after spending too long in Goldenfold's mind.

However, Redditor memejunk extended the idea even further by theorizing that it was Rick who accidentally "incepted" the idea into Goldenfold's brain. While Rick mentioned the poop in his mouth, Mr Goldenfold still had the incepting device in his ear, which may have led to him waking up with this newfound longing subconsciously imprinted on his mind.

What A Load Of Shit

This inception theory has taken hold of the entire multiverse, forming the basis of numerous Reddit threads including this one here and was even expanded upon by Redditor kmack2323 in a video here. However, some detractors suggest that this line of thinking just isn't possible, and it's all because of the Season 1 episode where Rick accidentally turned the entire human race into disfigured blobs dubbed 'Cronenbergs'.

At the end of 'Rick Potion #9', Rick found a reality where its version of Rick had managed to save everyone from becoming Cronenbergs permanently, but died soon after, allowing him and Morty to take their places. Technically, the Season 3 episode Pickle Rick took place in a different timeline, leading some to believe that the Goldenfold who was incepted with the idea of eating feces is from a different reality, disproving any link between the two.

Does Goldenfold eat poop with Szechuan sauce?:

The argument against this, of course, is that Rick deliberately sought out a new earth where everything was basically identical, aside from the fact that the Cronenberg incident was avoided. It stands to reason then that Goldenfold was probably incepted in this new reality too, and thus probably also enjoyed chowing down on the brown thanks to Rick's meddling.

"Shut up and listen to me! It's fine. Everything is fine. There's an infinite number of realities, Morty, and in a few dozen of those, I got lucky and turned everything back to normal. I just had to find one of those realities in which we also happen to both die around this time."

Whether you agree with this assumption or not, there is another possibility that may also account for Goldenfold's poop-loving revelation... which also, shockingly, turned out to be entirely Rick's fault.

What The Squanch Is Going On?

In the Season 2 finale, the Galactic Federation took over Earth, forcing people such as Mr Goldenfold to move underground and live in the sewers. If they ran out of food, it's entirely possible that these survivors may have resorted to eating poop, developing coprophagia. This would explain why Dr Wong treats numerous patients suffering from this disorder after the Galactic Federation left Earth.

In fact, if we combine the two theories, then it's entirely possible that after Rick incepted the idea of eating poop into Mr Goldenfold's mind, he may have then been the one to start this trend in the sewers at the end of Season 2.

Either way, creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon are known for layering joke upon joke in their writing, looping endlessly like the many realities which Rick explores, so it wouldn't be surprising if they had this in mind the entire time. After all, it does seem a bit odd that Pickle Rick dedicated so much time to the idea of stool munching, even if it was funny.

Whether you believe this theory or not, the takeaway is that Rick has proved once again that he is the ultimate villain of the show, ruining the lives of Goldenfold and mutant rats alike all in a quest to satiate his never-ending need for adrenaline and Szechuan sauce. It doesn't get more schwifty than that, folks.
