This article contains spoilers from DC's Legends Of Tomorrow.

The season finale of Legends Of Tomorrow was undoubtedly a thrill-ride — we saw time remnants, temporary deaths, time storms and Black Flash. But amidst all that, the one thing that has most people talking is Rip Hunter's sudden departure from the crew.

The former captain of the Waverider revealed how proud he was of Sara's leadership skills in his absence before officially requesting permanent leave, which was granted to him. With that, he left his ship and his team in very good hands.

But as he was absent for the early half of the season, many of us were confused by Rip's sudden departure. We just couldn't understand why the series would see the Legends go to all that effort to bring him back, only to lose him again in the season finale.

However, speaking with EW, executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently revealed that the Season 2 finale isn't the last we have seen of Rip Hunter. Here's what Guggenheim had to say:

"We've got plans for Rip for next year. It's just in a different capacity than him being a member of the team."

The idea of a new storyline for Rip is definitely an interesting one. Remember, even though he was absent in the first half of Season 2 — due to actor Arthur Darvill's commitments on Broadchurch — he still had a jam-packed storyline in the second half. So what could possibly be next for the character?

What's Next For Rip?

Rip has definitely had more than a bumpy ride this season. Since the premiere, he disappeared, had his memory wiped, worked with George Lucas, worked on some films with the same plot as the show's first season, and eventually was reprogrammed to become one of the season's big bads.

Despite the fact that he did rejoin the team of as a Legend, he never returned to his previous role as captain. And as we all knew, he is a leader at heart. Thus, for that reason, he just didn't feel he could add to the team without being captain.

So the possibilities for his return are definitely intriguing — he's already been a captain, a Legend and a villain, so what more could they do with him?

Something worth looking into is the fact that while Rip did indeed depart the ship, it was never revealed when or where he got off. The Legends had left the surviving members of the Legion Of Doom back in their rightful places in the timeline — 1972, 2014 and 2016 — so it's possible Rip got off in one of those locations.

Or perhaps he returned to the future he came from. After all, he recruited the Legends to stop Vandal Savage's reign of terror in the future — a mission they accomplished in Season 1. Thus, his future is safe from the tyrant.

But that leaves us wondering: Is his future even intact?

Remember, the season finale ended with the shocking revelation that Los Angeles in 2017 didn't look the same — it was overflowing with dinosaurs and mystical buildings. In the words of Sara Lance, the Legends had "broke time." So, perhaps Rip's future may be overrun by dinosaurs too. On that note, the 2017 time-crisis just might be what brings Rip back into the fold — will he adapt to a new prehistoric future or return to the past and help the Legends save time?

No matter what he ends up doing, Rip's return to Legends Of Tomorrow for Season 3 is definitely a good thing. While Sara has done a remarkable job as captain, she's an even better Legend. And for that reason alone, Rip should eventually return to his original post as Captain. But in the mean time, I can't wait to see what changes lie ahead for Captain Hunter in Season 3.
