Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Legends Of Tomorrow Season 2, Episode 12 "Camelot/3000" and possible spoilers for Season 2, Episode 13 "Land of the Lost."
This week's installment of Legends Of Tomorrow not only saw our favorite time-traveling #superheroes make their way to the future but also to the past when they attempted to rescue fragments of the Spear Of Destiny and keep them away from the Legion Of Doom. While a certain JSA member met an untimely end in the future, the Legends did manage to keep the final piece away from the Legion in the past, and even retrieved their former Captain Rip Hunter. So while things began to look up, Hunter threw a major curveball.
Yes, it appears that despite the fact he is evil, Rip Hunter can still control Gideon. And that doesn't bode well for the Legends, as the artificial intelligence controls the Waverider.
Gideon Will Turn On The Legends
To say that Gideon is the heart and soul of the Waverider would be a major understatement. The artificial intelligence not only powers the Waverider, she has the ability to inform them of threats, time aberrations, important timeline news and can also heal seemingly untreatable injuries — remember how she brought Sara Lance back from the dead?
However, all that power is now firmly in the rogue Rip Hunter's possession — which means they're trapped in the timestream with the man who practically controls their own destinies. There is literally no corner of the Waverider that Gideon can't see, which means nowhere is safe for the Legends.
Moreover, as revealed in the trailer for the next episode "Land Of The Lost," Gideon is programmed to follow Rip's commands — thus, she is powerless against him. So even if it were possible for the AI system to get attached to the Legends, she would be unable to prevent herself from following his orders. And the synopsis for the next installment highlights just how much power Rip possesses:
A DIVIDED MIND — After capturing Rip (Arthur Darvill), he forces the Waverider to crash, leaving the Legends stuck seventy million years in the past. Ray (Brandon Routh) leads Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Nate (Nick Zano) to recover a vital piece of the ship. In an effort to get the “good” Rip back, Rory (Dominic Purcell) suggests they enter Rip’s mind, but what Sara (Caity Lotz) and Jax (Franz Drameh) discover in his subconscious is not pleasant and they must fight evil versions of themselves. Meanwhile, Nate and Amaya continue to get closer, but it could cause serious ramifications.
With Gideon's control in his possession, there is no telling what depths he will sink to in order to retrieve the Spear Of Destiny — which happens to be on the ship. But the question is — can everyone's favorite artificial intelligence stop him from doing something he may live to regret?

Will Gideon Remind Rip Of Who He Really Is?
Since Rip Hunter's conversion at the hands of the Legion Of Doom, he has been downright chilling to watch. The once lovable captain has resorted to any means necessary in order to gain the fragments of the Spear of Destiny — including killing Dr. Mid-nite from the JSA. Furthermore, after having his emotional ties to the Legends severed, he shows no attachment to his former crew — something which he demonstrated last week when he temporarily killed White Canary Sara Lance.
However, while it might not mean much, we did see the slightest glimmer of hope when he spoke to Gideon. If you can look past his evil stare and villainous grin, you can almost sense a little emotion in his voice. As he reminded us that Gideon is always there for him, we may have shuddered a little but it behind that chilling statement, there may be hope. It's true — Gideon has always been there for him — and perhaps that could be the way to regaining his humanity. The Legion may have stripped away his emotional connection to the Legends, but nobody said anything about Gideon.
The former captain and the AI system have had a long history together, and if anyone could pull him back from the brink of villainy, it just might be Gideon. And now might be her chance to do so.
This week's episode of Legends Of Tomorrow certainly caught us off-guard with that major twist. Just when we thought Rip had been captured, we discover that he still has control over the one entity that has always been there for him — Gideon. But the question is — will the next episode see him fall deeper into that black hole of villainy or finally claw his way out of it? The artificial intelligence system that operates the Waverider will be a key player in "Land Of The Lost" and we have to wonder if she will truly shut herself down for her former captain. Whether Hunter retrieves the Spear fragment or not, one thing is certain — the Legends' fates are in Gideon's hands.
