There was a mixed reaction from #Archie comics fans when The CW announced plans to adapt the classic characters and storylines for a brand new TV series called #Riverdale. As predicted, the series deviated from the source material and created a much darker, sexier world than the one portrayed in the original comic books.
While Riverdale hasn't been pulling in tremendous ratings, the series has attracted a worldwide audience largely due to the fact that, outside of the U.S., it is distributed through Netflix. The positive reaction and online success of the series has clearly paid off, as The CW have officially renewed the freshman drama for a second season.
We're definitely excited that Archie and his friends will be sticking around a little longer, but this renewal raises questions. One thing worth noting is that the first season has been stylized as a serial with each episode being described as a "Chapter." This means that the current murder storyline will likely reach its conclusion by the end of the first season.
The renewal is proof that there is more story left to tell — so, with this in mind, let's take a look at what could be on the horizon for Archie and his friends in the second season.

Will 'Riverdale' Draw More Inspiration From The Archie Comics For Season 2?
Television series like The Walking Dead and Preacher have proved that comic books can adapt very well to the screen if they are executed properly. So far, Riverdale has followed that tradition, but with a renewal under its belt, the show's writers and producers will likely draw from the Archie comics once again for the second season.
In terms of storylines, there's a lot of comic stuff that hasn't been explored yet. For example, a little known fact is that the character of Sabrina Spellman actually exists in the same universe as Archie. Some fans have been hoping to see the teenage witch wave her wand on The CW series, and Riverdale showrunner Robert Aguirre-Sarcasa told The Wrap that he wouldn't rule it out:
“As I say, never say never, but it’s certainly within the realm of possibility.”
With a second season coming up, it's very likely that other comic book characters such as Sabrina will appear on the show, though it'll be difficult to think of anyone else playing the role that Melissa Joan Hart made famous.
Will Jason Blossom's Killer Be Revealed Before Season 2?
While it's likely that Jason Blossom's killer will be revealed before the first season is over, there is the possibility that The CW will end it on a horrifying cliffhanger. The show is popular enough to survive such a hiatus, and television viewers certainly love a good old-fashioned mystery.
Perhaps the investigation will continue into the second season? Or perhaps the killer will be revealed to us moments before the credits roll on Season 1?
If the Jason Blossom storyline is wrapped up before Season 2, then it'll be interesting to see if the murder mystery element of the show will be dropped going forward. CNN describes Riverdale as "Archie meets 'Twin Peaks,'" so there is a heavy reliance on the mystery storyline — could the show survive without it?
I think so. I know Riverdale is a rather mythical town, but I highly doubt there will be another murder so soon. Then again, stranger things have happened. No, like seriously — Barb from Stranger Things made an appearance in one episode.
Will Archie Finally Make A Choice Between Betty Or Veronica?
Regardless of whether or not the murder storyline continues into the second season, diehard Archie comic fans only have one question on their mind — Betty or Veronica?
The age-old dilemma about which girl the redheaded heartthrob will choose is likely going to be an important storyline in the show's second season, much like it has been in the first ... but will Archie ever actually make a choice or will the showrunners keep us in suspense for the foreseeable future?
To be fair, it's a pretty tough choice — while we all feel bad for Betty Cooper over her unrequited love for Archie, there is definitely something mysterious about Veronica Lodge and her badass personality. I wouldn't want to be in Archie's position because no matter which girl steals his heart, there will be severe repercussions for all parties involved. Let's just hope that we've seen the last of Geraldine Grundy.
Riverdale joins the long list of The CW series that have secured renewals for the fall season. The others include The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Jane The Virgin.
Riverdale airs Thursdays on The CW.
