Riverdale knows exactly how to leave fans wanting more. The CW's freshman series exploded onto the scene in January and (thanks in part to Netflix) gained an incredibly large fanbase. But its strong writing and engaging mystery kept us tuning in week after week to discover who was behind Jason Blossom's murder.

But it took things to a completely new level when the first season bowed out on with an infuriating cliffhanger that left us all in shock. And now, as we're left with many questions heading into Season 2, The CW has shed some light on the show's new mystery with a brand new trailer. Check it out below:

Carrying on from the last trailer, we are once again reminded of the critical condition that Fred Andrews is in. Archie's father was shot by a mysterious gunman in the Season 1 finale, kickstarting a brand new mystery for Season 2. Much like the last trailer, the final shot of this promo suggests that dark times lie ahead for Archie as he is comforted by Jughead, Veronica and Betty. But we have to wonder if Fred will make it out alive.

A New Direction For Jughead

Riverdale's answer to Jessica Fletcher, writer Jughead Jones, was responsible for spearheading the student investigation into Jason Blossom's murder last season. But the broody, beanie-wearing loner soon found himself attracted to partner in crime-solving Betty Cooper — and "Bughead" became the show's most beloved couple. And just as they were about to take their relationship to the next level, Jughead was seemingly offered the chance to follow in his father's footsteps and become a member of the gang known as the Southside Serpents.

However, the new trailer suggests that Season 2 will have Jughead undergo quite the emotional journey. We catch a glimpse of him affectionately kissing Betty in their regular rendezvous spot, Pop's Diner. But as fans of the show will notice, he's wearing a Pop's Diner uniform.

Does this mean that he wasn't allured by the Serpents after all, and instead got a new job?

However, we also catch a glimpse of him and Betty preparing to ride a motorcycle. Maybe it's just me, but the quiet and reserved novelist from the pilot certainly doesn't seem like the type of person who would take great pleasure in riding a motorbike. So we have to wonder how much Season 1 changed him as a character. Perhaps he really has followed in his father's footsteps after all. Maybe he didn't choose the Serpents' life, maybe the Serpents' life chose him.

While Jughead is undoubtedly the town's best asset when it comes to solving mysteries, he's also pretty great at being mysterious. So we can't really be sure what awaits him in Season 2.

The Gunman Returns

While last season's mystery revolved around Jason's murder, it's pretty clear that this season's arc will focus on the mystery of who shot Fred Andrews. The masked man may have been the aggressor in the Season 1 finale when he pulled that trigger, but he'll undoubtedly feel the pressure in Season 2 from the vengeful Archie and inquisitive Jughead.

But those worries won't stop the unknown assailant from making a comeback. In the trailer, we can see the gunman making his way down what looks like an outdoor aisle during a wedding ceremony. In fact, if you look closely, you can actually see a blurry bride and groom in the shot. Thus, we have to wonder: Who is the attacker's next target and why is he striking at such a public event? And speaking of which, who's getting married?

Season 1 of Riverdale was undoubtedly gripping . But with Season 2 almost upon us, this new trailer has not only highlighted that a new mystery awaits the gang, but it has also raised a lot of questions about certain characters. With Archie out for revenge, Jughead possibly becoming a Serpent, the Gunman back for more and the return of Molly Ringwald as Archie's mother, it seems like the creators of Riverdale are pulling out all the stops to make sure Season 2 is even better than their first outing. Let's hope they succeed.
