His most well-known character may be a billionaire superhero with a suit of incredible armor, but soon Robert Downey Jr. will gain an ability Tony Stark never had when he appears in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.

The film — which was picked up by Universal Studios following a bidding war — will be the third adaptation of Doctor Dolittle, a character created by author Hugh Lofting in a series of children's books written the 1920s. The books followed the antics of Doctor John Dolittle, a doctor who starts treating animals after he discovers how to communicate with them in their own languages.

The first adaption of Lofting's books was the 1967 musical Doctor Dolittle, starring Rex Harrison as the title character, and the second was in the 1998 film Dr. Dolittle with Eddie Murphy, which also spawned four sequels.

While no synopsis for The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle has been released, the title is very similar to the second book in Lofting's Doctor Dolittle series, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, which won the Newbery Medal in 1922.

In the book, Doctor Dolittle goes on a sailing adventure to Spidermonkey Island, with two animals and one human companion. Through the book the characters not only brave a shipwreck but also meet the incredible Great Glass Sea Snail.

Although the announcement was only made this week, the character of Doctor Dolittle seems like the perfect fit for ., who is a big animal lover, frequently posting photos of himself with animals, or even in animal-themed costumes!
