While filming Twilight, Robert Pattinson had to endure hours in uncomfortable contact lenses with rain pouring on him. Some of the shoots weren't easy. But that's nothing to what he put himself through for Good Time, which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival — from only eating canned tuna to living in a dark room for months.
Seldom do actors get so involved in their work that they become their character, but that is exactly what #RobertPattinson did for his role as Constance in the bank heist film Good Time.
For two months, Pattinson lived in a dingy basement in upper Manhattan with no natural light. (Almost like, you know, a vampire.) He told news.com.au the grueling details of those eight weeks:
“I literally lived in the same basement apartment [as the character] in Harlem. I never opened my curtains, didn’t change the sheets the entire time I was there, for those two months, and I would just sleep in my clothes."
The star even lived off canned tuna and hot sauce, keeping to himself in an effort to appear as an outcast.
"I kept really weird hours... I was by myself the whole time. ... I only ate cans of tuna the whole time. I probably have mercury poisoning now because I ate it just out of the can. That’s all that was there: tuna, hot sauce, and Nespresso capsules.”
Living like his character wasn't the only concession Pattinson made. Telling Variety he wanted to look like he was "street cast," he worked with a makeup artist to tone down his good looks:
“We experimented with a few different things. You’ve got these pock marks in the skin and no one recognizes you. We shot the movie on the streets of New York, and no one took a cell phone picture.”
Based on his performance and the reaction at the Cannes Film Festival, Pattinson's all-in approach worked. In fact, the actor has had Oscar buzz for his role as a bank robber trying to get his brother out of prison.
Still, watching his evolution is difficult for #Twilight fans who miss the handsome face of #EdwardCullen. As Robert Pattinson takes his career in a different direction, we will always see the vampire who stole our hearts.
