*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars story. But you knew that already, didn't you?*
Rogue One is in many ways different to the original saga. The fact that events in the film play out the opening crawl of A New Hope in itself goes some way to explaining the plot, and how the Star Wars spin-off will tie-in with the wider universe. But still, there are a number of Rogue One spoilers that have leaked into public consumption.
While the final result may be clear, a lot of intrigue surrounds the new batch of characters. Jyn Erso leads the way as the new protagonist, a delinquent antihero with a volatile nature, who has been recruited on a borderline-impossible mission to steal the plans to the Death Star. Her relationship with her father, Galen Erso, will underpin the story, and also leads to some of the biggest spoilers prior to the film's release.
The Fate Of Galen Erso
Galen is somewhat of an enigma. In the previously released trailers, it is clear that he has a big role to play; Galen built the Death Star, and it's his message that is intercepted, providing the catalyst for the mission. But what's the backstory? Well, exploring beyond the borders of live-action gives us answers.
The build-up to Rogue One is covered in James Luceno’s Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel. The synopsis erases any mystery surrounding Galen's backstory in the process, revealing he is old friends with Orson Krennic. After Krennic saves Galen, his wife Lyra and daughter Jyn, a huge debt is held in favour of the evil Director.
As a skilled scientist in the field of energy research, Krennic provides Galen the platform to escalate his research, with the best tools and resources to aid him. Little do Galen and Lyra realise, Krennic is using the promise of equipment to trick Galen into helping construct the Death Star, the mammoth, moon-sized weapon that is capable of destroying entire planets. Essentially, Galen created the Death Star unwittingly.
Considering that Krennic is hell-bent on creating completing the construction at all costs, it's likely Galen's intercepted message won't be received well. Add in the fact that Mads Mikkelsen has already confirmed most of his screentime will deal in flashbacks, and the fact Galen is conspicuously lacking from the trailers to date, it does seem likely he will die. In further spoilers, he could even be dead by the beginning of Rogue One.
And Bad News For Chirrut Îmwe
The reveal of Galen's fate is intentional, though. After all, releasing a novel exploring the life of some of Rogue One's lead characters before the film reaches cinemas is sure to be noticed by fans.
Now on to the unintentional: During the Star Wars celebration, Jiang Wen, who plays Baze Malbus, accidentally let slip the fate of the skilled warrior, Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen). Wen revealed that the deeply spiritual believer of the Force, Îmwe, will die in Rogue One. His death is said to have an impact on the rest of the team, shifting their perspective on the metaphysical.
