As soon the news broke that Rogue One was in production, frenzied anticipation for the first trailer reached boiling point quicker than you can utter the phrase "Star Wars spin-off." Those who doubted the appetite for more intergalactic rebellion were silenced with the release of the debut trailer, which accumulated a breathtaking 30 million views within 29 hours of being online.
In modern Hollywood, the quality of a film's trailer is crucial to its entire marketing campaign. With a hugely saturated market, film studios can no longer rely on a brand, a high-profile actor or a compelling storyline alone to get audiences into the theater. The pressure was even greater on Rogue One, the first anthology movie in one of the world's biggest franchises.
But the trailers have delivered, and we have all the reasons why conveniently gathered below. Impatient? That's fine, before you read on, check out our video breakdown below. It's a feast for the eyes:

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer 3
Most of the focus of the third trailer centers around Jyn's father, Galen Erso, and his work on the Death Star. As well as Galen, new-wave villain Orson Krennic is seen directly communicating with Darth Vader.
One of the biggest questions will be whether Jyn can trust her father, who appears to be leaking information on the project. Is he using his daughter to defeat the Galactic Empire? Or is it all an elaborate set up?
The trailer also hints at the wider Star Wars universe, including the underworld, the fallen Jedi Order, Darth Vader's link to the Jedi, and more insight into Saw Gerrara, who originally appeared in Clone Wars.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer 2
The biggest talking point of the second Rogue One trailer was the most hyped five seconds of trailer history (probably), the back of Darth Vader's unmistakable outfit, as the evil genius overlooked plans for the Death Star. It's exciting, of course, but does his inclusion in the trailer help the movie?
Focusing too much on the iconic villain would do a disservice to all the other nuggets of information. Building on what has already been unpicked (see below for trailer one breakdown), the second trailer includes further references and clues to the Rogue One's story. The key points include:
- A look at the sacred planet Jedha, a pilgrimage site for those who believe in The Force. But what could the repercussions be?
- Insight into why Jyn was chosen in the role, and the importance of her father, Galen Erso
- Cassian Andors's recruitment of fellow Rebel Alliance members.
- A closer look at K-2SO
- Speculation on Saw Gerrera's role
- A look at the film's true villain, Director Krennic
Furthermore, although Rogue One leads into A New Hope, there are also subtle links to the prequel series hidden in the trailer Check out the full article outlining how here, which also takes a closer look at K-2SO and Chirrut Îmwe, and how they feature in the trailer.
