When director signed on to tackle Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, most of the conversation focused on how he would handle that undertaking and where it might lead. But it became quickly apparent that the other talking point was whether he would be able to juggle directing Star Trek Beyond, as well. The answer to that turned out to be "nope", so the hunt has been on to find the next director for the rebooted Star Trek franchise.

Two names that have been rumored as potential replacements have been and , and in a recent interview with Hitfix, Abrams himself all but gave his blessing regarding the latter.

Abrams does caution us not to put the cart before the horse, however, explaining that certain things - like a script - need to be in place before nailing down a director:

He's incredibly talented and we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert. But there are things we're focusing on right now before the director, which is just sort of the fundamentals of where the story is gonna go...It's too early to talk about details but there have been a lot of really exciting ideas about what comes next.

While a lot obviously needs to happen between then and now, the fact that Abrams spoke so highly of Wyatt and seemed to be familiar with his work indicates that the studio has, at the very least, reached out to Wyatt to start the conversation.
