*Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for Rogue One*
Rogue One is a film that benefits from being placed directly in the midst of the action. The spotlight is cast over the group of rebels responsible for stealing the plans to the Death Star, and how their actions set off the domino effect that goes on to ignite the original Star Wars trilogy.
But as well as more references than one can shake a lightsaber at, the use of well-known planets, spaceships and fixed plot holes, Rogue One also served another purpose; it linked the main saga with the animated series, Clone Wars, by including the character of Saw Gerrera.

Saw Gerrera: From Rogue One To Rebels
Now, following #ForestWhitaker's portrayal, Gerrera is set to return again, this time in another animated TV show, Star Wars: Rebels. Long before Whitaker brought the rebel fighter to live-action, Gerrera appeared in Season 5 of #CloneWars, set decades before Rogue One, when he was in his physical prime.
In the video below, Gerrera is somewhere between the two portrayals; not quite at his prime, but a far cry from the wounded, battle weary character who appears in #RogueOne:
#Rebels producer David Filoni has taken the characters arc in the anthology into consideration, deciding to avoid providing an extra backstory explaining how his physical state deteriorated so much. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said:
"He’s not quite as beat up as you see him [in Rogue One]. I never wanted to go into a lengthy thing about this is how Saw lost his foot. It’s more about his philosophy and who he is and what he thinks about the Rebellion — and how they go about resisting the Empire."
Gerrera will star in the Rebels two-parter called "Ghosts of Geonosis," for which Filoni consulted with Whitaker, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards and Lucasfilm's Kiri Hart. The episode will air on DisneyXD on January 7, 2017.
The latest news isn't a huge surprise, after a promotional image revealed his inclusion. But it's still an exciting development, using Gerrera as the glue that holds the fabric of the #StarWars universe together. Better still, Whitaker will reprise his role, adding his Oscar-winning voice to the series. That's not something many saw coming.
