On the 20th of December 1996, Scream was released. Written by Kevin Williamson (I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty and Dawson's Creek) and directed by Wes Craven (The Hills Have Eyes and A Nightmare on Elm Street), the film focused on a young girl who finds herself at the center of a murder spree, with the killer using horror movies as part of a deadly game.
#Scream has been credited with reinvigorating the horror franchise after many years of dull direct-to-video movies, but it also gained kudos for casting actors that were established and successful within the business. Twenty years later, it's still a cult classic!
The movie spawned three sequels, a parody film and a television series. But on the flip side, sales of the #Ghostface mask soared, and the movies have been accused of inspiring violent crimes and murders.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary, let's take a look at what the main actors have been up to since starring in the iconic original film.
Who did they play? Campbell played Sidney Prescott, the center of the first Scream movie. Dealing with the one-year anniversary of her mother's murder, Prescott becomes the centre of a group of murders in the town of Woodsboro — with the culprit closer than she thinks.
Where have we seen them before? Neve Campbell has starred in all four Scream movies, but got her big break with roles in Party of Five and The Craft. Neve went onto to appear in Wild Things, 54, Grey's Anatomy, and most recently starred in Season 4 of House of Cards.
Who did they play? Ulrich played Billy Loomis, Sidney's boyfriend and an avid horror fanatic. Billy is struck off the suspects list for the murders early on — but as fans of the movie know, there's more to him than meets the eye.
Where have we seen them before? Skeet Ulrich also worked with Neve Campbell earlier in The Craft before going on to star in Jericho, Law & Order: Los Angeles and Unforgettable. You can catch him next in an episode of Riverdale, The CW's upcoming adult take on the classic Archie comics.
Who did they play? Gale Weathers is a bitchy, self-centred reporter who cares about nothing apart from breaking the story — and what's a better story than a serial killer in Woodsboro? Weathers's questionable decisions even earn her a punch to the face from Sidney.
Where have we seen them before? Starring in all four Scream movies, Courtney Cox is probably best known for playing Monica Geller in Friends. She's also appeared in Dirt, Bedtime Stories, Cougar Town and most recently Mothers and Daughters and Drunk History.
Who did they play? Deputy Dewey Riley is a police office who spends the film protecting his sister Tatum and her friend Sidney during the murder spree. He also happens to get his flirt on with Gale Weathers.
Where have we seen them before? Along with Campbell and Cox, David Arquette starred in all four Scream movies, and also has other credits like See Spot Run, Eight Legged Freaks, In Case of Emergency, Cleaners, and most recently Sigmund and the Sea Monsters on Amazon.

Who did they play? Tatum Riley and Sidney Prescott have been best friends since childhood. Ss well as being one of the most popular girls at Woodsboro High, Tatum is also dating Stu. Tatum meets her fate in what could possibly be one of the best death scenes ever, when she gets her head squashed in a doggy-door.
Where have we seen them before? Having only appeared in the one Scream film, Rose McGowan's main claim to fame is playing Paige Matthews in Charmed. She's also known for being passionately outspoken about issues surrounding sexism and abuse in Hollywood.

Where have we seen them before? Having only appeared in the first Scream, Matthew Lillard can also be seen in She's All That, Thir13en Ghosts, Scooby Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Bosch, and most recently, in a couple of episodes of Halt and Catch Fire.
Who did they play? Randy Meeks worked at a video store and was a horror movie buff. He also was good friends with Sidney, whom he had a crush on, and hung out with her group of friends.
Where have we seen them before? Jamie Kennedy appeared in three Scream films, but you may have also seen him in Malibu's Most Wanted, Son of the Mask, Ghost Whisperer, The Cleveland Show, The Hungover Games and Heartbeat.
Who did they play? Casey Becker is a student a Woodsboro High School and an ex-girlfiend of Stu, who also happens to be the first victim in the Woodsboro Murders.
Where have we seen them before? Drew Barrymore was already an established actress before appearing in the first Scream film, and has starred in hit movies like E.T, The Wedding Singer, Charlie's Angels, Family Guy and Miss You Already.
Like many people, I instantly fell in love with Scream the first time I watched it; it was smart, funny and had all these little easter eggs for the horror universe. A lot of horror films leave viewers screaming at the TV, chastising the character for poor decisions — but Scream showed people fighting back, and running out of the bloody house! For this — any many other reasons — Scream is undoubtedly one of the most iconic horror movies ever made.
