When Divergent released back in 2014, it was clearly keen to try and glean some of the success that the wildly popular Hunger Games franchise had experienced. Unfortunately, the Divergent series never reached the heights of Hunger Games, and by the time Allegiant, the first film of the planned two-part final installment, was released in 2016, it was clear that the franchise had become a box office bomb.

However, with the franchise was still very obviously unfinished, to try and please fans and bring the series to an end, producers have mused over the idea of the series ending with a made-for-tv movie, which would act as a pilot for a spin-off TV series. Despite it seeming improbable, there were still many fans of the Divergent series who were holding onto the hope that Shailene Woodley, who played main character Tris in the first three films, would also be a part of wherever the franchise ended up being, but sadly she has finally confirmed that will not.

While on the red carpet for her upcoming HBO series Big Little Lies, Woodley was asked by Vanity Fair whether or not she would be taking part in the final part of the franchise. "No," she replied, "I’m not going to be on the television show."

This echoes what she told Screenrant back in September:

"I didn’t sign up to be in a television show. Out of respect to the studio and everyone involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show."

Unfortunately it looks as though any future Divergent series movie or TV series may have a very different-looking main cast, with Woodley's costar Miles Teller also uncertain on his return to the franchise, especially after he only found out about its move to TV about 20 minutes before the news was announced to the public!

And with the studio still yet to make an official announcement on the future of the series, for the time being fans just have to sit tight and hope that they'll eventually get a fitting conclusion to this saga.
