Warning: This article contains spoilers from Season 7 of Showtime's Shameless.
We're almost halfway through the seventh season of Shameless and things are really picking up for the nation's favorite dysfunctional family. Although we're back to basics this season, the Gallaghers have been forced to make a lot of tough decisions, some of which are impacting their familial relationship with their siblings as well as their best friends.
Although Season 7 of Shameless is airing a lot earlier than the show's usual mid-season premiere slot, the show hasn't faltered at all. With so much happening in the latest installment of the Showtime dramedy, let's take a look at several things you might have overlooked from this week's episode, Season 7, Episode 5 entitled "Own Your Sh*t."
1. Frank Is Taking Advantage Of The Homeless
Frank may have seemed like he was on the straight and narrow — the righteous path towards a new beginning — with his obsession with housing the homeless but as always it didn't last. This week, a bigwig rich guy was so impressed by Frank's "selflessness" that he bought the house for specifically for the homeless.
However, Frank saw this as a prime opportunity to lord his alleged ownership over the other occupants of the house, as well as sending them out to beg and then stealing their profits. Season 7 showed a different side of Frank as he began to care for his new family — although he never really cared for his own family — but it just goes to show that a leopard never changes it's spots. Boo Frank.
2. Carl's Relationship With Dom's Dad Is Giving Him The Positive Influence He Needs
I'm not usually a fan of Carl's solo storylines but I find myself really enjoying his growing relationship with Dom's police officer dad. Carl has the encouragement that he needs to actually make something out of his life and he even showed desire to leave the South Side of Chicago at some point.
Not only is the police officer a source of knowledge for Carl, together the pair are hilarious — they are quickly becoming one of the greatest duos on TV and I definitely find myself looking forward to seeing where their relationship will go next.
3. June Squibb Joins The Show
Legendary actress June Squibb joined the cast of Shameless in "Own Your Sh*t" as Etta — the lovely lady who runs the laundromat across the street from Patsy's Pies. From their relationship, it's evident that Fiona and Etta have known each other for quite a while and I look forward to seeing this relationship develop in the coming episodes.
I have a feeling that Fiona, who is currently looking into becoming an owner of property, will invest in the laundromat and save Etta from the rich men trying to steal her home. Squibb is a celebrated actress who has made many TV appearances in recent years from Glee to Ghost Whisperer.
4. Blast From Debbie's Past Explained
For those of you who need an little refresher, the girl that approached Debbie in the latest episode is Tanya — a relative of Derek, who is the father of Debbie's child. Debbie saw this woman as an inspiration in the fifth and sixth seasons of the show, which led to her wanting to get pregnant in the first place.
Tanya didn't look too pleased to see Debbie out on the streets begging for money, so I'm pretty certain that it was Tanya who called social services on Debbie. Perhaps now Fiona will stop being so hard on the other Gallagher siblings once she sees they are in need of her help.
5. Lip's Old College Buddy
If you were watching Shameless and couldn't remember who Lip's friend was then look no further. Joaquin was Lip's best friend at college a couple of seasons ago and, although they often got high together, they were always hanging out and talking about problems they had. In fact, Joaquin was a part of Shameless during Lip's relationship with his tutor Helene.
Joaquin's reappearance is related to Lip's new internship and the two are planning on stealing money from the illegal venture anonymously through the internet. I can't see this ending well for either of them. Oh Lip — please stop messing up your life.
6. Lip Likes Sierra More Than He'd Care To Admit
Lip and Sierra may have been hooking up but it's been clear since the beginning that they weren't actually dating each other. However, it was evident in last week's episode that Sierra might like Lip a little more the she's letting on as she watched him make out with another girl.
The latest episode had a total role reversal as Lip was the one watching from afar. He stared at Sierra while she flirted with another guy at the diner. There was definitely a hint of jealousy in his eyes. Whether or not the two will become an item remains to be seen, but there is no denying their chemistry together.
7. What Does Svetlana's Reference To Mickey Mean?
In order to better preserve their financial future, Svetlana, V and Kev agreed that it would be for the best if they were all listed as legal guardians of each other's children. In other words, each person would adopt the other's child. In doing so, Svetlana mentioned how "jailbird father" — Mickey Milkovich — has nothing to do with Yevgeny — her son.
I found this rather odd because even though Mickey spent all of his time with boyfriend Ian, Sveltana and Mickey worked quite well together as parents and even Ian helped out a lot. Mickey went to prison but that didn't change the relationship that he had with his child. There was no animosity between Svetlana and Mickey and they raised the child extremely well together in Season 5. With Svetlana's declaration about Mickey not being involved in Yevgeny's life, will this affect the fan favourite character when he makes his highly anticipated return to the show later this year?
Check out a preview of next week's episode of Shameless:
Next week will mark the half way point in what has clearly been Shameless' most re-inventive season yet. With Ian exploring new relationships, Lip making all the wrong choices and Fiona trying to get the balance right between work and family (and currently failing at the latter), it looks like we will be in for many more shocks as the season unfolds. After seven years, Shameless is still one of the best shows on TV and that doesn't show any signs of changing.
Seasons 1-6 of Shameless are now available to stream on Netflix or catch up on the latest episodes over on Hulu. What would you like to see in next week's episode? Tell me your thoughts in the comment section below.
