It's been almost a year since we bid farewell to the Gallagher clan when the seventh season of Shameless came to an end. The latest season of the Showtime comedy-drama saw the Gallaghers go through a difficult period as Fiona followed her dreams, Ian experimented with his sexuality and Lip found himself having problems with alcoholism (much like his father before him). However all of their struggles were overshadowed when the family's absentee mother, Monica, passed away, leaving us all a bit teary-eyed.
The Gallaghers survived all of the trauma and are set to return for an eighth season on November 5th. In an attempt to get us hyped up for #Shameless's return, Showtime has released a trailer Season 8 — and if we're being honest, it looks pretty incredible. Check it out below:
A New Beginning For Frank
As you can see, it looks like everyone has their own cross to bear in Season 8, but arguably the biggest thing we can take away from the trailer is that Frank is a reformed man. Yeah, I know I'm pretty shocked too and I can't help but wonder how long his newfound love of family will last this time.
Remember, the deadbeat dad tried something similar in Season 7 when he attempted to replace his family, recreating the Gallaghers with a bunch of homeless men and women whom he picked up from hostels. Oh, Frank. Whether or not he remains loyal to his actual family remains to be seen, but there is no denying that Season 8 will make the beginning of a new chapter for the character.
Frank appears to have given up alcohol in favor of smoking meth instead. While it's possible this could just be another phase, the recently released poster for Shameless Season 8 highlights Frank in a godly pose, rising into the sky, which is likely metaphorically representative of him getting high. In addition, the tagline for the eighth season is "trying to get higher" and, judging from the trailer, it looks like that will be Frank's primary goal throughout the upcoming season.
Fiona Will Face A Tough Dilemma
Fiona Gallagher made some bold decisions during Season 7, but she was absolutely right when she told Lip that she gave up her life to take care of every single one of the Gallagher siblings. As a result, she went a bit reckless, but it didn't take long for Fiona to prove herself capable of managing several small businesses, and before the season concluded she even purchased a block of apartments with the intention of doing some renovation.
However, despite moving up in the world, the eldest Gallagher may find herself in bit of a moral dilemma during Season 8, as she will have to become the thing that she has always hated: a landlord.
As Fiona will be in charge of the people living in the apartment building, she will have to make sure that the tenants pay the rent on time, which is pretty ironic; after years of struggling to make ends meet in the Gallagher household, Fiona will have to become one of the people whom she spent so many years avoiding. There's nothing we love more in a drama series than conflict (and when it's internal, even better) and Fiona Gallagher will no doubt be more conflicted than ever in Shameless Season 8.
At the end of the day, she knows how difficult it could be for the tenants to pay their rent; she's been there. So, the real question is: will Fiona become stricter or will she remain true to her roots, proving that she is "South Side, through and through"?
It's been a tough ride for the Gallagher family over the past seven years, but if they've proven anything, it's that that they're all capable of rising from the gutters (much like Frank in the Season 8 poster) and getting their life back on track. While they will no doubt face many more trials and tribulations throughout the upcoming eighth season, we've no doubt that they'll survive, because that's what they always do — and I can't wait to see what shameless shenanigans all of the siblings get up to this year.
Shameless Season 8 premieres on Showtime November 5th.
