With the rabid fan base that Marvel has, all anyone really has to do nowadays to get them going is make any kind of vague claim related to the booming cinematic universe. With the studio's future films lined up for many years to come, it's not that difficult to stoke the fires of fan excitement with a single statement. Future releases such as Ant-Man And The Wasp, Captain Marvel, and The Avengers: Infinity War are all underway in their preproduction, but none of them have yet to name their full casts.

Speaking to Wired, A Monster Calls star Sigourney Weaver let it slip that she was currently in the midst of a Marvel movie binge-watch marathon.

“To me, a good movie you cannot generalize,” she says. “I have been watching, for whatever reason, some Marvel movies, and they cast really good actors.”

And when asked why that was so, her short but sweet answer was an eyebrow-raiser that's worth making note of.

Weaver already has a long history of playing strong, independent characters

Speaking subtly, when the Wire pressed her about her sudden decision to watch the Marvel films, the only answer she provided was this:

I can't tell you!

Cue the speculation machine. What possible reason could Sigourney Weaver have - taking time out of her increasingly busy schedule - to marathon the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It is, after all, likely the Oscar nominee is a fan or maybe she's comparing the franchises of both the MCU and the DCEU to see who's better. Or maybe - like the internet firmly believes - she's doing some hard research to study up for her own role in the future of the MCU.

Which Film Could They Want Her For?

Given Weaver's history, my first guess immediately went to Captain Marvel. In a time where Marvel managed to do almost everything before DC, they still came in second in regard to introducing a female-led superhero movie. Making up for that by casting someone like Sigourney Weaver to join Brie Larson in Captain Marvel's feature film debut would be a definite step in the right direction.

Another possible feature that Weaver could easily be woven into would be the upcoming Ant-Man and The Wasp. The role of the previous Wasp, Janet Van Dyne, has yet to be officially announced but is widely speculated as having a high-profile name attached to it. Leading ladies such as Sharon Stone and Michelle Pfeiffer have both been tipped as Marvel's top choices for that role, however. But, well, couldn't you just see her playing Evangeline Lilly's mom, saved from the Quantum Realm?

Then again, it could be neither of these films. It could be that Marvel is setting Weaver up for a role in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War or the untitled Avengers sequel after that. With so many wonderful characters to choose from, it's impossible to say exactly where she'd fit in. Though I am without a doubt the masterminds behind the future of the MCU can easily find room for an actress of such iconic stature somewhere that pleases fans and is a perfect fit for Weaver's exemplary talent.
