A few days ago, legendary actress Sigourney Weaver let it slip in an interview to Wired that she was in the middle of binge-watching Marvel movies:

To me, a good movie you cannot generalize. I have been watching, for whatever reason, some Marvel movies, and they cast really good actors."

When pressed as to why, she immediately claimed up, only saying, "I can't tell you!" setting off speculation that she might be in talks with Marvel for an upcoming role.

Well now, it's official... but with a twist: Sigourney Weaver is joining the MCU as the main baddie in The Defenders, the Netflix series that will combine Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist to save New York from a new threat.

Head of Marvel TV, Jeph Loeb, made the surprising announcement during this year's New York Comic Con and had this to say about the actress:

“Marvel is honored to have an actress of her caliber and status join what is already our biggest show ever! She is by definition a class act.”

Vice President of original content at Netflix joined said this:

“Sigourney Weaver, what more is there to say,. She’s a formidable actress and we are thrilled to have her join our remarkable cast alongside Charlie, Krysten, Mike and Finn.”

That's not all though. At the end of the panel, Sigourney joined Charlie Cox, Finn Jones, Mike Colter and Krysten Ritter on stage:

There you have it, Sigourney Weaver will be squaring off against Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. There was unfortunately no info on which bad guy she'll be playing: Is her character a new creation or does she come from the comic books? Without a doubt, The Defenders is shaping up to be something special and 2017 can't come soon enough.

Fun fact: When the cast all walked out onto the stage together, Nirvana's "Come As You Are" started playing. Considering it's the same song used in the first teaser trailer, it looks like this is going to be their theme — perfect for the rag-tag team trying to find their way.
