Everyone knows about the Academy Awards and that they're the biggest and most prestigious handed out in the industry, capping off the awards season for another year.
What's less well-known, however, is that every year, the night BEFORE the big night, awards are handed out to those incredible projects created outside the studio system at the Independent Spirit Awards.
In completely unsurprising news, critical darling Silver Linings Playbook cleaned up at the ceremony, winning the Best Feature award, with winning both the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards, and the seemingly-unstoppable winning the Best Female Lead award.
Some first-timers won awards as well, with Derek Connolly winning the Best First Screenplay for his script for ’s Safety Not Guaranteed, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower taking home the Best First Feature award.
Amour deservedly won Best Foreign Feature. Ben Richardson won the Best Cinematography award for his beautiful work on Beasts Of The Southern Wild. The Best Documentary award went to The Invisible War. Middle of Nowhere and Starlet won the John Cassavetes and the Robert Altman awards, respectively.
