What do you get when you mix a bunch of talented people, a vision that people want to bring to life and some free time? Apparently it's Snow Steam Iron, the upcoming short film by director Zack Snyder. The announcement of this film came quick, and not too much detail has been revealed. Let's go over everything we now know about this project so far!
After a long absence, Zack Snyder took to Twitter and the new social network VERO on the 8th of this month to tease fans about a new project called #SnowSteamIron. He released a poster that shows a woman knelt over the outline of a body in snow and a what is presumed to be a pool of blood off to the side.
Snyder revealed in the same tweet that this was a "no budget" short film created with his friends and family over Labor Day weekend. After being accustomed to seeing major multi-million dollar blockbusters directed by Snyder, it's wonderful to see him working on a film just for the fun of it. Over the next couple days, more images were released again on Snyder's VERO account, giving more glimpses into the project. These photos were taken by Clay Enos, a friend to Snyder, who has been involved in some of his other films before. See the photos here:
Finally, on September 11, Zack Snyder released the teaser for the film. You can watch it below:
On a VERO post, Zack Snyder thanked actors Samantha Jo and Mike Justus for working on the film, and so far they are the only two actors we have clearly seen. Samantha Jo is the woman shown in many of the images and in the teaser, playing a character named Lin Woo.
Samantha Jo was also thankful to Zack Snyder for the experience, as she revealed in a Facebook post:
"I feel extremely lucky and honored to have been a part of this project and allowed this journey. Words can't express gratitude."
In the same Facebook post, Jo wrote that the SFX and beauty makeup were done by Logan Long and Willow Snyder, Zack Snyder's daughter. Willow is a freelance makeup artist and had actually worked in the makeup department of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so it's cool to see father and daughter team up on a film again. Below are a couple images taken from her website, detailing the makeup on Samantha Jo's character.
Even through the few pictures and short teaser we get of the film, #ZackSnyder's vision shines through. Despite not having his typical budget (but obviously with some supplies), the vibe and look of the film is still very much Snyder. Piecing together all the information, we can take a guess at the story's premise: the film is clearly set in the early 20th century and Samantha Jo's character is at odds with the law, so much so that she points a gun at a policeman's face. From the trailer, we know at some point she is captured and arrested. The film may show her escaping from arrest, or it may just show the events leading up to her arrest, so it will be interesting to see which is true.
As you've probably noticed, the social network VERO is integral to the release of this short film. At the end of the trailer, it says "coming soon on VERO," but also includes the Android and iTunes stores' logos, so it seems ambiguous whether it will only be released on VERO, or if there will be other viewing options. However, it stands to reason that Snyder acting as a "brand ambassador" is meant to help the social network grow, since he is close to creator of VERO.
At the moment, there is not a definite release date for this short film, but fans are waiting with bated breath.
