Having played Michonne since Season 3 of The Walking Dead, it's hard to imagine anyone except Danai Gurira in the role of the badass swordswoman. However, a recent interview with The Walking Dead casting directors Sharon Bialy and Sherry Thomas has revealed that a different — yet very familiar — face also tried out for the role!

Speaking to Insider, Bialy dished on how Sonequa Martin-Green initially auditioned for the part of Michonne, and while it was ultimately given to Gurira, Martin-Green left producers so impressed that it lead to the creation of the character Sasha. Bialy recalled:

"The producers fell in love with her so much they wrote her character for her. ... [Showrunner] Glen Mazzara at the time said, 'I'm gonna write something for her,' and he really came through on his word."

The character of Sasha was introduced to the show in the Season 3 mid-season finale, accompanied by a group that included her brother Tyreese. While she briefly spent some time in Woodbury, she ended up joining Rick's survivors and soon enough became a key part of the group. Even in death Sasha still showed a resourceful attitude, making the best of a bad situation and choosing to sacrifice herself in the hopes that her zombified remains might take out Negan. A true legend.

Not only was Sasha a full badass but she joined a small group of characters who had been written specifically for the TV series and weren't based on a comic book counterpart. Aside from Sasha, the characters Daryl and Merle Dixon were also created specifically for the TV series, as well as more recent minor characters like Enid and Jadis.

Sasha's time on The Walking Dead may now be up, but it's onwards and upwards for Sonequa Martin-Green who is the lead in the upcoming CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery. Martin-Green will play First Officer Michael Burnham, a human who attended the Vulcan Science Academy. The series will debut on CBS on September 24, and is a prequel to the original Star Trek: The Original Series. Meanwhile for fans of The Walking Dead, the series returns to AMC with Season 8 on October 22.

Was Sasha one of your favorite characters on The Walking Dead?
