Currently in its sixth season, hit biker drama Sons of Anarchy is reportedly projected for another seventh and final season before wrapping things up. FX's best ratings-bringer thus seems slated to end in December 2014. But what if series creator, exec producer, occasional director and most prolific writer wanted to milk the show a bit more and extend it for another season (the eighth)?

Well, there's no one better to speak for the man than himself. At an event hosted by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS), Sutter fielded questions concerning this possible extension of the previously-planned length of the show. A big chunk of his reasoning stems from his experiences on the popular show The Shield, which also settled for the magical number seven, but he's keeping an open mind. Here's what Kurt had to say:

There’s so many factors that determine whether a show continues or not. I came up with the initial awareness that if this show was being done in sort of the same production model that The Shield was in – and I knew that The Shield had about seven seasons. And I knew that at that point the show ultimately begins to eat itself and becomes more expensive to make. So I thought if we could get a full run I could tell the story I wanted to tell in seven seasons. And I knew by the end of this season I’d have a sense of whether or not I’d be able to do that, and I still think I can.

"My plan is still to finish it out in seven."

But look, I think if I got halfway through this season or at some point next season I felt like I couldn’t finish it, I’d probably be able to have a conversation with the network. [But] I think after seven seasons I don’t know if we can maintain the rhythm and the pace that we’ve done, and I wouldn’t want to extend it and have it become something that it’s not. So my plan is still to finish it out in seven.

Well, it seems pretty much settled then: avid fans of SoA shouldn't have their hopes too high for a bonus season. Sure, it might still be on the distant horizon, but from Sutter's wording things are looking pretty grim for that coveted eighth season.

What's your take? Would you prefer SoA to go out in style in the seventh season, or are you willing to risk a possible decrease in quality for the sake of some more hours of this already-great show? If you really, really want a season 8, how would you try to sell it to Kurt Sutter?

Sons of Anarchy airs Tuesdays at 10 PM (EST) on FX.
