It's hard to believe that it's been nearly two years since FX's critically adored (and hilariously controversial) show #SonsOfAnarchy came to its violent, roaring end. Kurt Sutter's motorcycle club crime drama captured the hearts of viewers the world over, and it came with a warning label not to get too attached to any of the characters well before a certain HBO show came along.
Because, like Game of Thrones, no character of Sons of Anarchy was safe — no matter how beloved they may have been. And not many of them got out alive. But a few made it past the show's seven seasons intact, and one such character is almost definitely returning for the long awaited spin-off.
The possibility of a Sons of Anarchy prequel series — which was tentatively titled First 9 — had been flying around since before the final season had even been wrapped up. Back in 2014, Sutter claimed that he was planning a spin-off prequel series to be set around the time of the Vietnam War and focusing on the nine founding members of SAMCRO.

But when Sons of Anarchy ended, Sutter went off to work on The Bastard Executioner, and the nature of the spin-off changed.
As officially confirmed by Variety back in May, the Sons of Anarchy spin-off would instead focus on SAMCRO rivals — the Mexican-American motorcycle gang The Mayans, who played an important role in the first four seasons. Script development on the series began earlier this year, with Sutter co-creating and producing alongside former anti-racism group Friends Stand United (FSU) member Elgin James.
The Mayans began as rivals to SAMCRO back in Sons of Anarchy Season 1, stealing their guns and burning down their warehouse, but the two gangs eventually formed an uneasy truce to stop an all out war. By Season 2 they were back to being enemies, and a drive-by shooting arranged by The Mayans took the life of Deputy Chief Hale (Taylor Sheridan) in Season 3. But come Season 4 they allied with SAMCRO again, later establishing new borders under Damon Pope (Harold Perrineau).
The Mayans don't feature all that heavily in Season 5 and beyond, though they still make their presence felt as Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) and Nero Padilla (Jimmy Smits) attempt to broker peace between the Mayans, the Triad and SAMCRO. As usual it all ends badly — but Mayan North Cal. chapter president, Marcus Álvarez (Emilio Rivera), and Stockton chapter president Oscar "El Oso" Ramos (Ivo Nandi), both survive to see the conclusion of the series.
First Mayans MC Character Confirmed
And now it seems we have our first Mayan for the Sons of Anarchy spin-off. Actor Emilio Rivera — who portrayed Álvarez — confirmed his suspected involvement via a post on his Instagram, in which he tags Kurt Sutter, Elgin James and the Mayans MC Instagram account.
News has been thin on the ground regarding exactly what form Mayans MC would take in relation to Sons of Anarchy, with popular rumors suggesting that the series would be set many years before the events of Sons, featuring main character Jax as a small child.
But Rivera's involvement suggests otherwise. If he is to be reprising his role as Álvarez — which is a pretty safe bet, as his Instagram hashtags suggest — it's likely that Mayans MC will take place either during or after the events of Sons of Anarchy.
And — a few hours prior to Rivera's post — Sutter re-posted a behind the scenes picture of himself on the Sons of Anarchy set with Rivera, just in case you weren't excited enough to see him again in the upcoming spin-off series.
It seems like it's time to get pumped, because "Mayan Monday" is coming.
