Without a doubt, Spawn is one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time. With endless adventures in comics, TV and film, the antihero has been a regular presence in our lives for over two decades. And now, he will be returning to the big screen one more time as the Spawn reboot is officially moving ahead.
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane will be writing the screenplay as well as directing, which marks his directorial debut. His company, McFarlane Films, will be partnering with Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions to resurrect the mighty franchise. The production company is renowned for producing low-budget #horror films, such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and Get Out.
And it appears that Blum is glad to have McFarlane steering the ship on the highly-anticipated reboot. Blum released a statement, commenting:
"Having worked with many visionary directors, I think Todd’s unique artistic talents will only add to his role as director of this film"
A Worthy Reboot
It was McFarlane who made the announcement on social media, telling his fans about the deal through a live Facebook video (which also featured a cameo from Kevin Smith). A large portion of his followers will know that he has been campaigning for a Spawn film for years, and from the video, it's clear that he's excited to be a part of it. Check it out below:
While a Spawn reboot has been in the works for many years (with McFarlane publicly backing it on social media), Blumhouse's involvement will finally set things in motion. With the character's only film outing receiving negative reviews, McFarlane has been very vocal about his desires to produce a gritty reboot worthy of his original comic book character. And now, his partnership with Blumhouse suggests that this is exactly what we're going to see.
