(Warning: The following contains potential — albeit largely theoretical — SPOILERS for the forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. Proceed with whatever level of caution your Spidey-sense suggests to you is wise.)

Now, of all the Spider-Man-centric rumors, in all the towns, in all the world, there's perhaps no more internet-inflaming option possible right now than anything that has to do with a certain Mary Jane Watson. After all, with Spider-Man: Homecoming star Zendaya's reported portrayal of the character getting a certain section of the Spider-fanbase pretty riled up, the subject is very much on most fans' radars. Or, at least, that's what the latest leaked images to emerge from the Spider-Man: Homecoming set would seem to suggest, showing everyone's favorite wall-crawler apparently rescuing a young redhead in midair...while she takes a selfie.

Which, if the images prove to be for real, would certainly be the sort of thing that could happen to a modern-day Mary Jane (she's persistently been thrown off of things by dastardly villains over the years), and a a modern-day Spidey (selfies are surely something the 15-year-old hero will be well aware of). The key thing about the images, though? They very much don't feature Zendaya, the widely-rumored new Mary Jane.

Well, perhaps. It's certainly possible that Marvel Studios has simply been screwing with us this entire time, and has secretly cast a young relative unknown to play Mary Jane in the movie, with Zendaya perhaps instead playing one of the many other beloved Spider-characters we've met over the years. It's also entirely possible, however, that the newly leaked images are simply intended as a red herring or are simply just pictures of Spidey saving a random young woman who happens to have red hair.

In other words? We still really have absolutely no idea, but it sure will be fun to find out when Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters in July 2017. After all, it's been a while now since we last got to see Spidey save the day:
