Most people like squirrels. I'm pretty sure that's a fact. Sure, you've got the occasional rabies-phobe or a couple people with a strong dislike of rodents, but generally, one can't help but look at these creatures and think "aw, now that's cute." This concept was surely in 's head when he came up with the plot of this horror-slash-thriller, titled Squirrels. We've already had dolls (although arguably not as cute) as horror movie protagonists, so why not auburn-colored, hairy-tailed squirrels terrifying the unsuspecting masses?
The project does not have a director attached to it yet. Expected for a 2015 release, what we do have is a pre-production pitch trailer in which we can taste a bit of what's to come in Bekmambetov's latest creative burst:
Apart from the trailer, what little we know about the movie is basically reduced to a crude plot synopsis. Here's the official blurb provided by the producers at a press release:
When a young man's estranged father is killed under suspicious circumstances, he returns home for the first time in years to get to the bottom of the mystery. Hoping to uncover some logical explanation, he instead finds his mom's sleazy new boyfriend, a natural gas company buying up the town, an angry female sheriff who happens to be his ex-girlfriend, and an army of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path due to an erosion of their food chain as a result of environmental destruction by the gas company.
The screenplay is written by Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Schiffrin, based on Bekmambetov's original idea. Squirrels will be distributed by Red Sea Media and will probably premiere at some point in 2015.
