When it was revealed that would be helming Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, it became more and more unlikely that he would also be directing Star Trek Beyond, the followup to this year's Star Trek Into Darkness. So the discussion for months has centered on who might replace him. While nothing has been confirmed as of this moment, a rumor has surfaced as to the identity of Paramount's current frontrunner. According to Latino Review, that frontrunner is . Chu's credits include G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Step Up 3, and (sigh) Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Star Trek 3 is due in theaters in 2016.

I know this may be construed as a Star Wars reference, which will confuse the mythologies here, but...Noooooooooo! I really hope that this is either an fleeting rumor or an absurd joke. I don't hate Chu, I actually liked Retaliation somewhat better than Rise of Cobra, though that's not saying much, and Step Up 3 was a lot of fun. However, there is NOTHING in his catalog or skillset that makes him competent to take over this franchise. And, not to beat a dead horse, but Justin freaking Bieber?! If in fact Chu is a top contender, this is nothing more than a cash-grab attempt by Paramount based on the box office returns of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. At one point (Attack the Block) was in the running, can we please go back to that time?

What do you guys think?
