The Force Awakens planted the seeds of many mysteries for us to agonize over in the two years until Star Wars Episode VIII would be released. With less than a year left to go (hooray!), the internet may be filled with fan theories but many of the questions in Star Wars Episode VII are left unanswered, from Snoke's identity to Rey's parentage. Thankfully, we know that will solve many of these mysteries, and the latest in a slew of rumors pinpoints one part of Kylo Ren's backstory that Star Wars Episode 8 will shed light on.

As ' new villain, Kylo Ren was one of the most compelling parts of — and yet he seemed rather lacklustre. Both Adam Driver and JJ Abrams have talked about how this sequel trilogy is in part an origin story for Kylo Ren as a villain. There's still a lot we don't know about how Ben Solo fell to the Dark Side, and how he assembled his Knights of Ren. On the Blu-Ray commentary, JJ Abrams confirmed that all of this backstory is already planned out — and deliberately wasn't included in The Force Awakens so that Star Wars 8 could reveal it instead. And now we may know exactly how this will play out.

Kylo Ren's Missions For Snoke

A new report from Mike Zeroh — the Star Wars rumor patrol YouTuber who previously revealed that Episode 8 would feature Rey losing a hand — claims that there will be an important flashback scene featuring a castle. According to Zeroh, many of the leaks and set reports have focused on flashbacks in Star Wars 8, as apparently this movie will be very "flashback heavy", showing us the story of how Luke Skywalker lost Kylo Ren to the Dark Side.

Interestingly, Zeroh doesn't just talk about Ben Solo but Luke's "fallen students", implying that the rest of the Knights of Ren weren't just randos that Kylo Ren picked up off the street, but that he recruited a gang of Luke's Jedi students to follow his dark cause.

To add some detail to the rumor that there will be a flashback scene to reveal the origins of the Knights of Ren, Zeroh has heard that this scene will feature an imposing castle. And according to Zeroh, this isn't the first time we've spotted the castle either, as it appeared briefly during Rey's flashback in The Force Awakens, when she witnessed the Knights of Ren slaughtering a mysterious clan.

Many people assumed this was a vision of Kylo Ren killing Luke's Jedi students, as Luke appears before this part of the sequence, but Star Wars Story Group chief Pablo Hidalgo later stated that this was not the case.

This makes sense, as the people Kylo's Knights kill certainly don't look like young Jedi students. So who are the clan, and why did Kylo kill them?

We have plenty of time to speculate over this — it could be that this was a mission for Snoke, and that the clan had some mysterious object crucial to Snoke's plan — but to bring it back to the castle, Zeroh pinpoints this moment as when we caught a glimpse of the structure.

Which... is far from conclusive. This could be anything, and to me this shadow is far too close to be a castle, as it looks rather small. However, it's certainly something important — why else would Abrams deliberately place something in the shot to be briefly illuminated by the lightning? Unless of course this was just some film equipment that got in the way. But that wouldn't be very Star Wars, now would it.

So it seems that the castle belongs to the clan in question, the group that the Knights of Ren slaughtered. This definitely seems to be an important part of Kylo Ren's backstory, and after that teaser in The Force Awakens hopefully all our questions will be answered in Star Wars 8.

Do you think the castle rumor is legit?
