We may not have a trailer yet for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, so the closest we can come to catching a glimpse of the upcoming movie is to sift through descriptions of the footage that was recently shown to shareholders. It's like watching a trailer, but without the excitement, the fun, and also without being able to actually see anything. So really, it's nothing like watching that trailer we really wish Lucasfilm would just hurry up and release already.

However, what the footage descriptions do give us are small, but vital clues about what is about. Previously, we learned Luke Skywalker's first line, as well as a key moment in Rey's training that sets up a possibly saga-shaking Force plot.

Now that SlashFilm have published a full breakdown of the footage, we also spotted another scene that establishes a main plot thread for Star Wars Episode VIII — and confirms rumors that were circulating earlier this year.

A Spy In The First Order

Of all the characters in , we know the most about Finn's story, which is tied to the fate of the Resistance. Leaks have been adding to this plot for the last year and a half, and surprisingly this snippet of footage actually confirms a lot of these rumors. Here's the shot in question:

Finn dressed as a First Order Officer on the bridge of a First Order ship. Actress Kelly Marie Tran was standing to Finn’s left, also dressed in a First Order uniform.

This confirms the rumor that John Boyega was being fitted for a First Order officer's uniform a few months ago.

Escaped traitor Finn standing aboard a First Order ship, disguised as an officer pretty much only means one thing: The self-proclaimed "big deal" in the Resistance has gone undercover to try and discover some secret within the First Order itself. The presence of Kelly Marie Tran's character is unsurprising, as all the rumors about Finn established that Tran's character is some sort of information broker or spy or, at the very least, a Resistance agent that helps Finn on his mission.

So what exactly is Finn's mission? Well, thanks to yet more rumors we know a bit about that too. This subplot is kicked off when someone attempts to assassinate General Leia Organa at Han Solo's funeral — the assassination attempt isn't confirmed, but last year Carrie Fisher did mention the funeral during an interview.

Deducing that there is some kind of spy in the Resistance ranks leaking their whereabouts to the First Order, Leia sends Finn off to discover who is behind the assassination attempt. This may lead him to the so-called "casino planet" that was filmed in Croatia, as John Boyega was spotted along with some aliens in tuxedos, engaged in an airborne chase on speeder bikes.

How he gets from there to a First Order ship is still a mystery, and it could be that this new piece of information disproves the previous rumors. We'll just have to wait until that elusive trailer is released to find out!

Tidbits From The Footage

Here are some more shots from the sizzle reel:

  • Rey's hand is shown touching the ground with fingers splayed, as pebbles and dust hovers around her. She seems to be using the Force.
  • There was a shot of General Leia directing the Resistance, with a hologram of the fleet behind her.
  • Luke Skywalker trains Rey, perched on a ridge on the rocky island of Ahch-To.
  • Flying an X-Wing, Poe Dameron yells "It's now or never!", implying another climactic space battle sequence.
  • There were plenty of shots of Rey igniting and spinning Luke's lightsaber — so I guess she's going to continue using this saber and not get her own (double-bladed) lightsaber as many fans (including me) hoped.

Don't tell me this wouldn't have been awesome. Ah well. I suppose there's always .

Tell us in the comments: Do you think Rey should get her own lightsaber?
