If there is one thing about the Star Wars prequels that fans can agree on, it’s that Ewan McGregor was terrific as Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was no small task stepping into the role made famous by Sir Alec Guinness, but not only did Ewan McGregor live up to his predecessor, he also helped a whole new generation of Star Wars fans fall in love with the character.
Following the success of The Force Awakens and Rogue One, fans are clamoring for more of their favorite characters to appear in future films. When it comes to characters who we'd love see starring in an anthology film #ObiWanKenobi tops the list. However, so far, Disney/Lucasfilm has kept quiet about the possibility of seeing Master Kenobi in future films. Another pressing question also remains unanswered: if Disney makes an Obi-Wan Kenobi anthology film, would #EwanMcGregor reprise the role?
Ewan McGregor On His Return As Obi-Wan Kenobi
During a recent interview with Business Insider for his film T2: Trainspotting, Ewan McGregor was asked if he would ever reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. McGregor responded:
“Listen, I have been asked about it a lot, to the point where it looks a bit like I'm sort of touting for work, I’ve been very open to say I'd be happy to do it, if they want to do it.”
Ewan McGregor’s answer is perhaps not what Star Wars fans are hoping for, but it does leave us with hope. The most important thing is that McGregor is up for reprising the role, and it shows that he has just as much love for the character as fans do. McGregor has been championing Obi-Wan's live-action return to the Star Wars universe since The Force Awakens was announced, and really hope that this time, Disney get in touch.
Could Ewan McGregor Return To Star Wars?
Disney and Lucasfilm have the next 5-6 years of Star Wars movies & shows planned. Although we don’t know what many of the projects are yet, the fact that Lucasfilm Story Group have planned so far in advance and (allegedly) haven't contacted McGregor yet suggests we might not see Obi-Wan for a while.

That said, if we do see a live-action Obi-Wan on our screens again, it's a safe bet that it'll be McGregor picking up the light saber. After all, he already reprised the role in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. During Rey’s flashback, McGregor provided the line: "These are your first steps". It stands to reason that if Disney contacted McGregor for something small like that, then they would definitely contact him for a much larger role.
Obi-Wan On Star Wars Rebels And His Possible Future On Film
Disney has already revitalized Obi-Wan Kenobi on Star Wars Rebels, and gave us a better look at what he has been up to on Tatooine between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Star Wars Rebels showcased the final showdown between Darth Maul and Obi-Wan, and did so in such a beautiful way, that it's become a must-see for every Star Wars fan.
The snippet of Obi-Wan's life on Tatoonie as we were shown on Rebels was a very narrow time frame, but witnessing his growth as a character was riveting, and something worth exploring in an anthology film – especially if Ewan McGregor was attached. It would be great to visit that time frame in a future movie; it's hard to deny that a film starring Ewan McGregor as Kenobi as he fights to protect Luke from The Empire sounds like a promising prospect.
Master Kenobi's appearance on Rebels has made fans miss him that much more, and really showcased why he is beloved character in the Star Wars universe. It's fair to say that the love for Obi Wan transfers over to Ewan McGregor as well, since he brought the character to life for an entire generation of Star Wars fans. Hopefully we will see McGregor back as Master Kenobi one day, but until then, you can catch Ewan McGregor in T2: Trainspotting at a theater near you.
