When Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise in 2012, we were promised big things for the Galaxy Far, Far Away, and the studio didn't disappoint. Following the astounding success of The Force Awakens and Rogue One, the Star Wars brand is as popular as ever, with multiple films on the way, including The Last Jedi, Episode IX, and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

That's impressive enough, but the House of the Mouse isn't stopping there. It's time to get excited, because and have announced that a brand new Star Wars trilogy is coming our way, led byThe Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson.

According to the report posted on the official Star Wars website, Johnson has been hired to write and direct a new Star Wars trilogy, with his longtime partner, Ram Bergman, set as producer. Well, now we know why the director didn't return to direct Episode IX, which is being helmed by .

Surprisingly, the upcoming trilogy won't focus on the Skywalker saga anymore. Instead, it will explore a brand new storyline with previously unexplored characters. Who those characters are is a complete mystery at the moment, but this clean-slate approach opens a number of possibilities for the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

For years, fans have been clamoring for a film exploring the early days of the Republic and the , so who knows? These next films could even be a good vehicle to explore the past of the franchise. Still, there are too many questions, and very little information at our disposal to make a concrete guess.

Speaking about this ambitious new plan, , president of Lucasfilm, gushed about Johnson and their time making The Last Jedi:

"We all loved working with Rian on 'The Last Jedi'. He's a creative force, and watching him craft 'The Last Jedi' from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

Similarly, Johnson and Bergman had nothing but great things to say about their new partnership: "We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on . Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films."

What Will Happen To Luke, Rey, Finn And Poe?

The announcement raises quite a few questions about the fate of some of our favorite heroes. The new Star Wars trilogy will introduce different characters, so you may be wondering what's next for , Finn, Poe and Kylo Ren. Well, they may not be part of the next chapter in the grander Star Wars saga, but they'll most likely stick around for more adventures.

Early in November, during an interview with The Star Wars Show, Kennedy revealed that our young pack of heroes had a bright future post-Episode IX:

"We're talking about the next ten years of Star Wars stories, and we're looking at, narratively, where that might go. Future stories beyond 'Episode IX' with these new characters, Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8."

With Star Wars anthology films proving to be successful, perhaps the characters will get the chance to shine once again through a standalone story. It's funny to think that Rey, Poe, Finn and Luke were introduced to audiences just two years ago, yet we're already wondering when they'll retire.

Now, what I find interesting is that Kennedy didn't mention Luke when talking about the future of the characters leading the Star Wars universe. I may be reading too much into things, but seeing how the newly-announced trilogy is ditching the concept of the Skywalker family, perhaps will be the last we see of Luke, at least for the time being. All we can do right now is wait to see how things develop. No release date was given for the next trilogy, so it may be a while until we get more information.

While we wait for the Star Wars universe to get even bigger, The Last Jedi will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2017.
